Q: New Retina Macbook pro 13 Haswell system hang/unresponsive

Hello Everyone.

I have just got my new macbook pro retina 13 Haswell (October Model). This is my second day of usage and i have encountered sudden system freeze for 2 times already. The keyboard and the trackpad stops working including brigtness keys and volume control keys. i have use apple hardware test but no problem are found.

Could anyone tell  me what is going on or having the same issue?

An Update: Caffeine doesn't fix the error for me, it just happened again. I will now try to plug in a USB 2.0 stick to see if that helps. So far it looks like the messages in the console have stopped so that's a good sign.

Not the most elegant workaround but better than not being able to use the keyboard.

Just had it happen again while browsing this thread, lol. Closing the lid fix is a lot easier than hard shutdown, so that is good. I am glad to see others are having the same type of issue on older MBP's with Mavericks as that mostly points to software problem.

Called in last night... the person I spoke with was personally unaware of this issue until my phone call. She confirmed it with her supervisor whilst on the phone with me. I was given no advice, and she even suggested that I could go to the nearest Apple store (uh...no. It's 5 hours away).

Do you still get error logs when your computer is asleep? If so, has it had impact on your battery life?

I haven't experienced any freezes, but the error logs keep going after I close the lid on my computer and it drains my battery very quickly.

    Thank,

No when i close the lid the laptop sleeps and i have no error logs. Have you Power Snap enabled with battery ?

-No I don't have Power Nap enabled. However, I am now keeping a USB flash drive plugged in all the time and it seems to have solved the battery drain issue. Will have to wait longer to confirm. As mentioned in one of my previous posts, I deal with several USB devices in my everyday use, but I had not been keeping any one device connected constantly, especially not when the computer is asleep.

Perhaps this error log manifests it self slightly differently in different configurations. I have not experienced a freeze, but perhaps the symptom on my computer is the computer trying to compensate while using up significant amounts of battery power.

    I have a 2.6gHz i5/ 8g/ 256.

    Thanks,

Guys/Gals when I posted 'the' error message, this type: "11/3/13 11:37:06.000 AM kernel[0]: The USB device Apple Internal Keyboard / Trackpad (Port 5 of Hub at 0x14000000) may have caused a wake by issuing a remote wakeup (2)"

about the keyboard and trackpad, it was because of the frequency of the log entries; this is a normal message if your MBP falls asleep with the lid open and you wake it by either touching the trackpad or space bar for example, if you have a wireless or BT mouse and use it to wake the unit, it will also post this mesage, this is normal.  What isn't normal is the constant wiggle of this driver whether it's the f/w or s/w driver or both, it shouldn't be doing that.  These entries should not be happening while you are using the unit, I think.  This might be attributable to an issue with a h/w interrupt handler, and the f/w or drivers that are interacting with the keybaord and the hardware cursor(track pad); the issue builds up over time, depnding on various use cases, and it eventually pukes, causing the f/w and/or drivers to simply stop. These are low level functions, and not easily addressed.  BTW those who are seeing log entries when the machine is sleeping, shouldn't, it means it's not really sleeping, check your energy settings, and so on.

The freeze has actually only happened me once so far, over the past 4 days since I purchased it.  I've been using it alot, migrating data from another Mac and a Winders box, in various ways; from the network, USB devices incuding an external 256GB SSD and an SD card are being used.  At one point I had a 32GB Sony USB stick, 64GB SDCard, and the 256GB SSD all plugged in and doing I/O, with no issues.  I am very happy with this machine, other than this issue.  Lovin' the app. integration aspects of Mavericks.

From what I can tell this is clearly an issue with mavericks and not the new 13" Haswell machine. I bought a BTO 13" (16G/512GB/2.6GHZ) Model that replaces my 15" Non-retina Macbook Pro from Mid-2010. Both Machines are experiencing the same issue that the trackpad freezes up after a couple of hours of use.

Both, on the 15" Mid-2010 machine as well as the 13" Haselll I find the former mentioned kernel log :

"03/11/13 10:04:37.000 kernel[0]: The USB device Apple Internal Keyboard / Trackpad (Port 2 of Hub at 0xfa100000) may have caused a wake by issuing a remote wakeup (3)"

From this I conclude that it can't be a hardware bug / error soley limited to the new 13" Haswell machines, otherwise it wouldn't be happening on my 15" non-retina macbook pro from 2010.

I would be more worried about code that is leaking and may cause collateral damage.

Here are some quotes from the Consol entries.  (Just search for "leak" in Console)

03/11/2013 08:49:13.498 com.apple.internetaccounts[217]: An instance 0x7fc81b589e70 of class IMAPMailbox was deallocated while key value observers were still registered with it. Observation info was leaked, and may even become mistakenly attached to some other object. Set a breakpoint on NSKVODeallocateBreak to stop here in the debugger. Here's the current observation info:

Getting the same message in my logs but I've never encountered a freeze yet and both USB ports aren't being used. I'm on my 4th day using the rMBP and I have yet to experience my trackpad or keyboard freezing up during heavy use.

Finding it a bit weird that I'm not affected by this, especially if it's a software bug in Mavericks that should affect all users. Maybe it's a hardware issue with the USB controller? The log message is just stating that the user woke the computer using either the trackpad or the keyboard. I might have gotten lucky with a good USB controller.

It could have something to do with your trackpadding technique as well.  Maybe the users who are getting it often are just swiping/tapping more?   I tend to do as much work with the keyboard as possible, and I've only had the freeze once.

Are you deliberately abstaining from the USB workaround to watch what happens? Just asking. If you are concerned, rather than curious, about damage then a USB device will prevent this. I have just done what you said, after a day of heavy usage - checked my Console logs and searched for "leak" - nothing there. Because I have had a USB mouse plugged in all day.

    Just a hypothesis:

is it possible that Google Chrome Browser make the situation worse ?

I know that a lot of Macbook locks at beginning or just after installation or configuration, but is it possible that Chrome make the situation worse ??? Anybody was using chrome when happened, or used just before ?

    I know, i am a fool please don't kill me !!!

Received it 5 days ago. No freeze at all.

Received 5 days ago - how many hours of usage do you have all together by now, approximately?

You have no USB devices plugged in? No bluetooth-mouse connected or something alike?

Your feedback is highly appreciated. Thanks for the info

I am in, first freeze tonight for my 6 days old MBP...
