I experienced the same problem. Just bought on October, the 25th, received this weekend, and "frozen" today while I was working. I had to restart the system and lost the stuffs I was working on. Quite unbelievable for a Mac Book Pro Retina paid 1329 Euro.

I just bought the new retina MBP 13" 8GB / 256 SSD ... Froze THREE times within the first hour of use... this is ridiculous. Apple needs to take action quickly, these are supposed to be premium laptops.

I am having the same problem.  I just purchased a brand new 13" Macbook Pro Retina three days ago.  Five minutes out of the box, the trackpad and keyboard froze up.

I called tech support and they said that this happens sometimes with new computers and it needs a reset.  ??

Nonsense.  Apple is really going downhill.  More concerned with being a mulitimedia company than a solid computer company.

A waste of money at $1400.

Unbelievable.  They should be embarrassed.  Or we should be, for tolerating it.

I've been buying Apple for fifteen years.  They used to make great products.

Is anyone at Apple monitoring these posts... 101553 views and 1727 replies ... and they call it "rare" in their support section

Just to clarify, I'm in NYC where tax is high, so the computer cost over $1400 including tax.

But really, for any machine, let alone a $1300 dollar machine, this is unacceptable.

And they call it rare?  It's happening all over.  I would just have purchased the 15", but they've made it so far out of reach with their new pricepoints.  $2,000 for a quad-core?

I've purchased a new 15" Macbook pro for the last three years, and now with the retina, they just say to their customers, pay $2,000 or you can't have a PRO machine really capable of the power I need to run the programs I need to run?

For so many reasons, I was annoyed with Apple, but I figured, pretty display, HDMI port, new Haswell processor, ok.

But for the machine not to work?

Are we to believe they didn't spot this in testing?

What happened to buying a Mac because "It just works?"

If they don't fix this soon, I'm returning this computer.

Wondering if it could be related to this "Mavericks uses ambient light sensor data to detect movement, delay sleep mode". I recognize that it's really the opposite issue happening, but was interesting when I saw this yesterday, and thought about this. I'm just waiting on resolution of this issue before ordering, and hoping it will be soon.

That sounds like an interesting theory, actually.

I wasn't aware that they used this to detect movement.

Could very well be related.  Are there manuals explaining the technology and how it's implemented on these machines?  I'd be curious to troubleshoot.

My 13" 8GB/256GB rMBP cost me £1249 here in the UK.  Thats $2002.90 for our American friends.  It's bad enough that we're ripped off when it comes to price, so it's hugely disappointing when such an expensive purchase has faults.

I wouldn't be the right person to provide more detail - I just read about the description of this new capability in an article on Apple Insider yesterday, and thought back to similarities to what is being documented here.

Ok.  Well, thank you for the reply.

I want the computer to work.  It's really annoying that I now have to stop loading my software because I don't know if I'll be returning it.

They no longer allow ram upgrades, no battery changes(at least not easily,) no storage upgrades, and we still buy their product...now they're making failing products?

I'm so tired of their annoying marketing and hearing all about their streamlining nonsense.  Making everything smaller and lighter.  What they're doing is simply taking all of the control from the consumer and into their hands.

    Uggh.

My trackpad froze on me twice today, already and the screen froze yesterday.

I really, really hope it's a software issue.

...and Apple still continues to keep silent. How hard could it be to release an update to fix this?

    They've really become blind.

If they just said that they were aware that this is a common problem and they're working on it, that would be fine.

But their wording is always downplaying issues.

    Same with the iphone.

I need to edit right now, but when I start opening a bunch of programs and moving fast, this seems to exacerbate the problem.

Just received mine, 13 inch rMBP, 8GB, 256GB.

Migrated files from TM backup and after reboot I had a freeze when opening Safari.

I rang to Apple care (Spain) and told me they are absolutely aware of the problem, not only because of the reporting in here but also because of the phone calls they are receiving massively.

The advisor told me they are releasing a Mavericks upgrade NEXT WEEK since it is most likely a software issue. Then I told him I'm keeping the machine for about ten days and if there is no solution by then I'll be sadly returning and asking for a refund.

I really HOPE they do what they CLAIM.

Thanks everybody for reporting the issue, keep on doing it!
