Depends what you are using it for I guess as to what specs you need. Mine will be used for writing a masters thesis, some other word processing type work.. lots of adobe acrobat READING ONLY.. some youtube.. few HD movies from time to time... and some web browsing n stuff like that.

Not sure if I actually need 8GB.. well I definitely dont *NEED* it.. in fact I'm sure for my purposes I would be fine with 4GB. I actually already have MS Office 2010 and can install it on another computer which saves me forking out an extra 100 or 200 for office for mac. And personally.. while 256GB HDD is nice.. I've had a 70GB on my home PC for yeaaaaaaars and still never filled it except when i had heaps of movies than ive deleted most of now (:

The PCIe ssd on the mac is a nice tech bonus.. according to samsung website the new haswell book 9's still have SATA SSDs (still pretty decent I'm sure). Likewise with Iris gfx (HD5100 or whatever its called).. that beats the book 9 as you say.. but in all honesty I think for word processing.. the odd HD movie.. and some youtubing/ABC Iview (australia) etc.. i doubt I'll reap any real benefits from the better onboard gfx.

I admit the issues seem to be worrying but as a few people have pointed out a number of times.. ure gonna have issues with any mass produced tech product.. and you are of course mainly going to read about the bad ones on a discussion thread like this which tends to leave you feeling negative or hesitant I find.

Still making up my mind (: Can you tell me where you heard the book 9 is coming with 8gig and 256gig hdd? I haven't seen that in any reviews and can't see any info about it on the samsung australia website.

PS. Yer the book 9 is freakin expensive ;( Good reviews on the keyboard and trackpad tho.. altho most reviews (well, pretty much ALL reviews) still rate the macbook as the best keyboard/trackpad out there.

All this comments are off-topic, please just reply if you are going to say that the patch fix or not the keyboard/trackpad freeze.

    Hi Anthvar,

Sorry, I havent looked up the error messages some people are talking about, nor have I had an issue with screen image retention (whatever that is).

I just know my Macbook is beautiful to work with and I wouldnt change it for the world! I'm not going looking for issues when everything seems perfect now the freezing has stopped.

    Cheers

    Fixed it for me - 13 inch MBPr, build date 10/29/13, i5, 16, 512.

Prior to patch I was getting the freeze. None since the patch. I do not and have not ever watched the messages in the console.

Ok, so I installed the EFI Update yesterday, everything was working fine, but I just had my first freeze. Exactly the same issue as before, not even closing the lid for 30 seconds worked this time. I am returning it and buying it again next year. I do not want to keep worrying about this issue anymore. I have followed this thread since day 1 and I read every every single message in all 156 pages.

Hope you do not get the same issue and actually get to enjoy your rMBPs. Cheerz!

Can you give us more details?

For example, how much time did you use it before freezing?

Which app were you using when it freezed?

Was the OS running and only Keyboard/trackpad freezed or also OS?

When did you close lid and reopened the login window appeared?

    - I used it for about 4 hours and then my keyboard/trackpad became unresponsive.

    - I was using facebook on safari.

    - It was only the keyboard/trackpad freeze. Facebook kept running but my keyboard/trackpad did not respond.

    - When I closed the lid and reopened I had same screen (safari and fb) open, because my mac was set to require a password 15 min after going to sleep.

    - All of this happened a day after I installed my EFI Update.

Thanks for your comments everyone, sorry this is getting off track. The problem reported with external hard drive overwriting is indeed limited to a software bug with WD so we can forget about that. WiFi issues appear to be connected to your router settings and doesn't seem that widespread. And the retina issue has some huge threads but reading through them has eased my mind somewhat. I did realise that my iPad mini has ghosting though! The upgraded book 9 info can be found here http://www.ubergizmo.com/2013/10/samsung-ativ-book-9-plus-updated-with-core-i7-8 gb-ram/

Thanks, yer, I looked it up and did find a review or two. Just doesn't seem to have any availability in australia. Actually the posts are kind of *ON* topic because the issues with macs are causing people to consider other stuff while keeping an eye on the macbook issues (:

No Good news. After the release of new EFI, few machines still have the same issue (if i am correct only 2 users)...

Maybe Apple didn't want to change completely the original firmware for some reason and they are evaluating it. So i cannot exclude a new  firmware in the next future, or maybe they need to insert anything inside 10.9.1 release. Just my suppositions but 99.9% of machines are working correctly so maybe few parts are real defective.

We will see... If someone buys a new 13 Retina please tell us if there is a Trackpad/Keyboard log errors on console, also if i don't think that they are linked, a lot of old MBP have the freeze without this error logs.

Didn't have any issues with networking at all in the home ecosystem 12 days ago, the new components were the 13" rMBP and 10.9.  I have two other active Macs on the network, the problems started with the Mac-mini(late 2012 i5, 16GB, 500GB SATA) when I applied Mavericks, and it's a different build too, than the 13" rMBP.  Shares go away in the middle of data transfer, DVDs won't umount from it until I turn off all Sharing, not just the Super Drive.  This is an extremely problematic release of OS-X.  I returned the 13"rMBP Sunday, they were very good about it, no questions asked.  The Apple support folks in CO were also very good when I called about an iTunes issue, they weren't able to correct it because again it is a problem with iTunes forward branch integration into 10.9, that actually didn't exiist on the same version of iTunes on the 13" rMBP.  There are inconsistancies in the way s/w development is handled at Apple that are causing problems, that actaully vary between OS-X 10.9 builds with the same application versions, very amatuerish.  Won't go into what the iTunes issues are here, or anywhere for that matter.  I am migrating media and all critical applications off of the Apple environment, and no it's not going to MSFT, H*LL NO!

That USB wake up message is not an error message, it is an overly verbose kernel message that will happen every time you touch the trackpad.  Want to see it stop.  USE A BLUTOOTH MOUSE, and don't touch the trackpad.

The worse thing about your predicament isn't the h/w choices, though it is an issue.  The BIG ONE IS you can only get Winders 8.x on it, and that's a realy steamer of an OS, you will absolutely hate it!  I'm not fond of the long in the tooth Apple UI, personally I wish they would model the next iteration closer to Win7 UI, which I can work faster in than Apple UI.  I'm real big on not using the mouse for things.
