Depending on his manufacturing date it is likely that his model came with the modified boot room, meaning the update was installed prior to shipment. Also, it's frustrating that so many users within this thread still recommend installing the EFI update which has already been proven to not fix everyone's issue. Is installing the EFI update a troubleshooting step? Absolutely. Should you claim that it will solve the problem of users reporting lack of response from keyboard and trackpad? Nope, not a chance.

To gb1xyl1, call Apple, explain your situation and state that you want an exchange for a brand new model. The first person might tell you something like, "We have to perform 3 repairs to replace a unit" but that is not true. Ask to speak to a different technical advisor, remind them that this was a brand new unit that is DOA OOB (out of the box) and that a supervisor will be able to grant replacement authorization.

    Hi,

I read a lot if this thread, but I can't remember where I read the things I need to check to see if I am concerned by this problem.

Do you know where I can read what to check, or can you write it again ?

Thank you and happy new year !

    Hi,

If you are only using VM for Visio then try using Omnigraffle, which is similar to, and better than imho, Visio! Omnigraffle is available as a trial download.

    jldeen,

Yes I did a direct exchange after troubleshooting and sending capture data to Apple. Stating my concerns that the "error messages"/Event logs" within console reporting - The USB device Apple Internal Keyboard / Trackpad (Port 5 of Hub at 0x14000000) may have caused a wake by issuing a remote wakeup (2) were not normal and needed to be addressed. Well they were addressed, and this issue was resolved. All is well in wonderland.

Chronic trackpad/keyboard unresponsiveness= return to apple. Early rMBP haswell builds all see this issue.

This is an update to previous posts of mine in this same thread. Like others have done, I too had Apple replace my 13" rMBP 2.4/256/16GB system with a brand new one.

I picked it up today and the issue persists. The EFI update came preinstalled as I am running the latest boot room (MBP111.0138.B03). I also have ensured all updates are installed.

Note: The system works "fine" (keyboard and trackpad operate) on a clean install but will not allow the keyboard / trackpad to function as desired after I use migration assistant. I have also tried to boot from known good external drives and the system will not mount the root device. I have tried these same 10.9.1 OS external hard drives with Late 2011, Late 2012 and Mid 2013 systems and all of them will boot up fine. It is only the late 2013 rMBP with Haswell that seems to be an issue.

I checked my console log and this is the same error that other users are seeing and I am seeing ON A CLEAN INSTALL as well. I see this error listed SEVERAL times.

1/3/14 10:32:04.000 PM kernel[0]: The USB device Apple Internal Keyboard / Trackpad (Port 5 of Hub at 0x14000000) may have caused a wake by issuing a remote wakeup (2)

I can get it to work, kind of, by jerry rigging it but it is not a full proof solution. I had to create a new profile, on a new install and import data, which is cumbersome to say the least. Again, my hard drives (current and fully up-to-date OS X 10.9.1) and time machine backups work on EVERY OTHER SYSTEM except the 13" Late 2013 rMBP.

At this point, I'm not sure if it is best to wipe the system and return it seeing as Apple clearly doesn't want to accept responsibility of this catastrophic failure and properly address it to offer a fix or if I should allow the Apple rep I am working with to contact his engineers as previously discussed. I would hate to keep the system and discover that a fix will never be released which results in an expensive paperweight. I fully expect this to be a result of both hardware and software and the way the software addresses said hardware considering the system works outside of 10.9.1 Mavericks.

I am quite surpised that you are able to get 10-12 hours when the actual advertised hours by Apple itslelf are 9!

The max. I have been able to get actually is 6 hours on moderate use like just browsing(using Google chrome, yet it can be a bit of a battery hog) with brigthness set to 5 and backlit keyboard completly off as well as bluetooth. Yes, the battery meter does display once in a blue moon 12 hours of batter life left but that is just till you leave the Macbook idle. The moment you start using it, the battery drops down.

Can you pease comment on your usage and settings(keyboard, screen brightness etc.) ?

It is a great machine overall though and after having everything setup, all the apps installed, I hate to return it just for the battery issue. As far as I can tell I don't think there is any specific hardware issue with my battery.

    Thanks!

I bought a new 13" rMBP last month, and then I swapped it in for a new one when this started happening ten days in. The new one has the EFI update preinstalled and the issue started reoccuring today, 2 days after my store return period has ended.

I use this laptop for live performances, so this issue basically turns it into a $2000 paperweight.  My first Macbook. Hooray.

As promised, i wish to update the info about my 13" rMBP. I bought it during thanksgiving last year, and used it for around 2 hours everyday, nothing happened to my laptop till now. It works just perfectly.

Are the issues in this post still ongoing? I've been thinking about getting an rMBP.

I bought the 13-inch MacBook Pro Retina (Late 2013) on November 13th, the 2.4GHz,8GB,256GB. I haven't had one freezing/hang issue with the keyboard or trackpad at all. I haven't screen burn-in either. I, however, two weeks later returned it to get the 2.6GHz,512GB model because It has double the storage. No issues with this one either, and I've had it for over a month now.

You'll love it. Pick yourself one up and enjoy!

Has the issue with the keyboard and the trackpad freezing  on the macbook pro retina 13" been solved with the

macbook pro retina EFI update v1.3 or the problem remains?

I don't want to spend my money (1449 Euros in Greece) on sth that is no responsive considering the money you have to spend to buy it.
