I met the same issue 2 times in 5 days. I am not sure whether I need to return it or wait for some fix from Apple. rMBP, 8GB ram, 256GB SSD. 1499 model. In my case, when the keyboard and trackpad froze, even the caps lock key was not able to work. Does that mean this is a hardware issue? Really frastracted with this issue.

    I wouldn't return it for 2 reasons:

    1. A few posts up some people wrote that the Senior Apple Care reps are aware of the issue and they are working on a fix, which will be released within a couple of days.

    2. Let's say it's a hardware issue, which I doubt. Apple will replace the laptop/faulty hardware within the 1 year limited warranty anyway.

I've been patiently awaiting the arrival of my BTO 13 inch MBPr, tracking it from Shanghai to Boston. Got it today. Yup, 2 hours into playing with it and it did the freeze thing. So I think it's probably everyone...(awaiting software fix unhappily). It is a beautiful machine, though.

Just spoke with Apple Care Senior Support...

They are now aware of the issue and confirmed it is software. They are working on a software fix and believe it will be released in a couple of days.

This deserves a massive bump, in big characters!

    But for now

Always have a USB Flash Drive connected! This should stop the trackpad/keyboard from locking up

I bought a 13" Retina MBP Saturday and  the system has frozen twice. This is my first Mac after 20+ years of Compaq, HP, Sony and Dell computers. I'm impressed with the computer and hope its a simple, quick fix.  The issue for me is that Apple has not addressed this yet, even if its just an acknowledgement and a promise of a solution.

Also having occasional locks... about 4 in 3 days. At least one lockup was resolved by closing the laptop, waiting a minute, then opening the laptop.

I did notice that the console message seems to be related to touching the trackpad. If I touch the trackpad and wait more than 5-6 secs, then touch the pad again, a new message appears on the console. If I touch the pad again within 5 secs, no message is displayed. This may not be an error but a trace message within a section of code that indicates a particular function/operation was triggered.

I got my rMBP (13/8gb/256) yesterday and I used it last night and today.

So far, Keyboard/Trackpad freezing never happened to my machine.

But, I see the message in the console 2/3/4 times a minute.

I tested attaching a USB flash drive, the messages don't show up if the USB is attached, if I disconnect the USB, the messages show up in the Console again.

Should I be worried as Keyboard/Trackpad is not freezing but I see the messages in the Console?

    Well yes and no.

    a) yes - this is pretty indicative of a freeze going to happen - as all other community members have had the same symptoms

    b) no - you can always keep it plugged in, and this is a software fault - it will be resolved.

I've even seen a case of someone plugging in a USB after the freeze, thus causing the system to un-freeze (keyboard and touchpad)...

Now, when I say "freeze" - I mean lock up the keyboard and trackpad - the system still works - i.e. if you are watching a movie, and the keyboard locks up, the movie will still play. It's not a complete system halt like in a Kernel Panic (Linux/Unix term for a complete crapout)

Got my rMBP (13"Retina/i7/16G/512G) today and have been over 3 hours heavy use now. No issue.

    * No key/pad err in console

    * Did set power saving settings to 1.5 hrs

    * No USB disk/iPhone plugged in

    * Did not use Safari

Seems to be a good start. Having been reading this thread for 2 days now. Hope this brings hope.

Ah ... I have staring at the shipping box of my top of the line new 13" rMBP for 24 hours now. I finally opened it. I have been waiting to even consider turning it on because I can't afford the hit in productivity of a computer freezing. In fact, I reasonably can't afford the hit in productivity to set it up until the weekend because it never goes as fast as one hopes... but at least now with the beautiful post from Lost Aggie via bibashdevnull, I will undertake the migration.

Note to newbies: I have been an Apple customer for years and I have only known them to be extremely good about customer complaints and repairs. They have always gone above and beyond. I knew it was just a matter of time, but if it was hardware, it was going to be more difficult to fix. Having been in the industry, you cannot imagine the meetings and scrambling and yelling that is going on to fix this.

My freeze did not involve a usb being plugged in it literally froze for apparently no reason I was actualy using Safari when it happened.

I have this issue but has anyone thought of why the demo models at Apple always work? There's at least 20 in the store, and they are pretty much on 15 hours a day. Anyone know what Mavericks build they are running on?
