Yep, if you don't have any live performances 30 secs 'offline' is something I can live with for at least a couple of days. But for you, this is a crucial problem. There have been suggestions that USB devices prevent the problem from occurring, but as for now there has been no official statement on the problem from Apple. So we don't know if they are working on it and we also don't know whether the problem is software or hardware related. Although based on the spread of the problem and the specific OS build number on the 13-inch retina MacBook Pros, the problem appears to be software related. Furthermore, a solution could be hours away or weeks, nobody knows.

I suggest you borrow someone else's Mac (a different model) for your next performance.

Going on 23 hours without a freeze up with a USB port filled. No error messages either.

I got my (2.8 Ghz, 16GB RAM, 512 GB Storage) 13 inch MacBook Pro yesterday and it froze twice on me already.

Same thing here. I returned the original machine I recieved as it was happening all the time and I hadn't seen this forum. Second 13", 256, 8gb has not had any freeze issues in 4 days but the errors are in the console. Upon inserting a usb stick for a mouse the errors have stopped. Also reported the issue to Apple via the links provided earlier here and in person at the store. My 2 cents would be to return your machine and get a new one. That will without a doubt catch Apple's attention. I will return this one within the 14 days if it's not fixed by then.

I have left the USB adapter for my Logitech MX Anywhere mouse in the Macbook Pro 13 Retina Haswell for the last several days now and have been freeze free.

So I am cautiously optimistic that the USB trick works.

If anyone has a USB device to plug in and leave it there just do it, you don't have to make any use of it, but it seems to keep the freezing from occurring.

Awesome laptop, I like it more everyday.

I can't understand why there is no response or statement from Apple yet. If this is just a small software bug ... why they dont tell us? My machine is on the way from china right now ... I think I will return it asap, without open the package ...

    Hi guys,

I haven't had any freezes for almost 2 days. This "fix" might be a consequence of some other problem I solved. I don't know if it is related, but I'll tell it to you in case it works for other people. I discovered that when I did searches on the mail program I didn't get almost any results. Apparently, the content on my mail app was not properly indexed due to Mavericks. So I re-indexed spotlight. I followed these instructions:

    1. From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
    2. Click Spotlight.
    3. Click the Privacy tab.
    4. Drag a folder or an entire volume (your hard drive) to the list.
    5. If prompted for confirmation, click OK.
    6. Remove the item or volume you just added to the list by clicking it and then clicking the minus ("-") button.
    7. Close Spotlight preferences.

I dragged my entire volume. My searches started working again and since then I've had no freezes.

I also restarted my computer and pressed cmd+alt+p+r at some point, but another person in the forum said that this particular restart hasn't worked for him.

Both solutions are quite harmless so it doesn't hurt to try them.

I try this method yestoday, it seems worked for me, that do not hang up all day, but the Apple console also logs:

The USB device Apple Internal Keyboard / Trackpad (Port 5 of Hub at 0x14000000) may have caused a wake by issuing a remote wakeup (2)

I can only guess. If they officially say "there is a problem with the macbooks built between x and today, maybe the sales will drop dramatically until people have regained confidence that their hardware was assembled later. I think, from the perspective of public relations / sales it is much more clever to say "there had been a problem and we fixed it" rather than "there is a problem and we are trying to fix it."

The first sentence will not stop people from buying. The second one probably will.

Sad but true, this means: the people who have already bought are less important than the people who potentially will buy.

I am having same problem on 2012 MBP except only seems to happen when using a certain application. The application continues to run but keyboard and trackpad become unresponsive.

Tried adding flash drive and still froze up.

Tried closing the lid and waiting a while came back and the trackpad works but clicking does not and the keyboard doesnt work either.

I spoke with a Senior Apple tech this morning.  He wanted to capture the computer but then after some more digging he said that Apple was aware of the problem and they were working on a software fix.  I asked him if this was a hardware issue and he said it was not and to watch for an update soon.

Guys, I just want to let you know that the fact that your laptop is not freezing for 2 days doesn't mean that the issue is solved, except the USB solution.

I'm not trying to rain on your parade, but that's reality.

My late 13" rMBP is freezing only every 2-3 days once, but it's still happening. Happened about 3 times since I got it. So even if it didn't freeze for 2 days, if it did once, the issue still exists.

I think Apple should offer the extended AppleCare Protection Plan free to all recent buyers of the rMBP whom are suffering this issue.  Extra peace of mind and all that.

Also having this issue. Happens twice a day at most. Closing the lid and re-opening appears to fix the issue.

FWIW I think this is an extremely minor issue and urge patience to anyone affected; this is the sort of thing that happens when you buy one of the first new models fresh off the assembly line. No biggie.
