I installed windows 8.1 onto my 13" rMBP machine.  I did have a minor issue during the install where I couldn't personalize or select information during the final parts of the installation.  However, I just swapped my usb from the rights side to the left and my keyboard/trackpad worked.

I will check the event log tonight in Windows to see if there are any entries.

"Seems like you can close the lid for 30sek - 1 min or so, then mine works again! "

Great, so if I bring this in to do a presentation I can look like a moron for a minute or so while my new computer resets itself.  Or like the DJ previously in this thread, the house can go silent while we wait for the laptop to clear itself of an issue that apple won't publically acknowledge.

At least this thread taught me that a USB deviced plugged in may dispel this condition.

I have the same problem, but mine is a first generation 15" retina. Might be Maveriks?

Very frustrating. this is my 3rd mac and I have never had as many issues with a machine as I have had with this one.

GenXGamer, are you saying the keyboard or trackpad hung during Windows?

Also for everyone suggesting checking the Windows Event Log, you know that by default they are not particularly verbose?  I don't think it's a forgone conclusion that it would appear in the default configuration of the event log, if this is indeed a hardware issue.

Mine is a self-configurated Haswell&Retina MBP 13'. The weired thing was, when the power cable is pluged in, it worked perfectly, well i mean in the way it should work..... however, when i take it out with me, say in the library, the keyboard&trackpad stopped workign randomly.... I posted feedback to apple, hopefully they would give some REAL suggestions or solutions regarding to this problem.... otherwise I have to return it.... $%^W$%^

I made it and other people have the same issue but didn't know this thread...

I called Apple store, where i bought my Macbook late 2013 6 days ago,  and i asked if they know this issue, the guy said no problem with new MBP Retina and they are not aware of it ( Incredible ). I said to look at internet and on Apple Communities Support because we have problems with this new MBP. Just i cannot beleve it ....

exactly! i spoke to a few different apple support folks over the phone and pointed them to this thread and they told me the same thing "this is the first time i heard about it".

so if you have not done so, call them and log a case with them- so that they can track internally. (eg: xxx number of cases on the same issue)

To be honest, I find it hard to belive. It was all over the inernet two or three days ago. There are obviously thousands of people having the issues. MBP get returned in great number.

Here are my thoughts about this:
    a) you call the support. The support says: "Yes, we hear about this all day long. But I can not tell you anything about what the problem is and how or when it will be fixed, sorry"
    b) you call the support. The support says: "Oh, really? This is the first time I heard about it. I am sorry, I can not tell you much about it now as it's totally new to me."

In which case is your "support experience" better?

Either the support team of Apple consists of 50.000 people and there is no management, no information-flow, no nothing - or they simply must have heard about these issues, but are told to not talk about it. (and by that somehow confirm there is a problem)

Brand new MBP froze twice pretty much after logging in for the first time. As other users have commented it seems ok when something is plugged into one of the USB ports.

Yes! when this problem happened the first time, my friend sitting next to me told me that his MBP 15' 2012 had this issue afterupdating to marverick.... thus it must be a software problem...

For those of you who reinstalled the OS (a different build), where did you download the OS from? I can't download it from the App Store since it's already installed on this computer.

Could anyone post a link? I'm going to re-install. I'm tired of waiting for Apple, and I want to see if this will fix it.

    Thanks!

Ok just an update I had time to call Applecare today ( Day off ) and the Tech knew about the issue he told me software update is on the way in a few days.

So I think we can all relax at this point, Apple knows about the issue and it's going to be a software fix Soon.

In the mean time Keeping the USB plugged in is avoiding lockups so far. I have NOT had a lockup with something in the USB yet.

6 lockups so far without anything in the USB.

    FWIW

I been having the problem now for a few days.  a suggested temporary solution was to just plug in a usb drive. however when i did this, the light on the drive didnt stop flashing, was working slowly and the console reads a continuous stream of  mdworker warning import bad path.   whats thst mean??

@Oli.S72 I am sure Apple are aware of the situation by now but are not reporting it to the press as that could damage their sales.

Still it would be nice to something from them. Will be returning mine if there's no update within the next few days.

Jonny, try another drive and see if you have the same issue. If you do, your issue sounds different. If it only happens with the one drive you plug in, it's probably because of whatever that device is (not the computer).

    Yes...this is a good news!

My exchange is coming the next week (99% that it will have the same issue) and in those days I hope the fix will be out. I really hope for this...

Anyway, I think that this problem aflict 100% of 13" Retina late 2013, but only people like us write on this forum. maybe a lot user read only and don't post here, maybe a lot of user had this issue only 1 or 2 times and don't care, but for sure...IMHO this problem afflict all mac of our type. This freeze are totaly random...myself don't get freeze for 3 days than get one...and 2 in a days...

I was thinking this may be an issue with the OS. I found a bug originally that I was able to recreate on my friends macbook pro 2011. To recreate this bug read the bullet:

    • When I first received the computer the first thing I did was to use imessages. I wanted to make a profile picture for imessage, but realized that "change profile picture" function did not work. If you quit the message program and open again the image was removed. The only way to do so was to edit your own contact card information. If you go to System Preference-> Users&Groups -> Contact Card "open"-> the system starts to get buggy (lag slight & freeze) as it creates/opens a contact card for you it did so for me....but the lag did not happen for my friend until he clicked the default image for profile. At first the default image for profile picture will say "me" but as soon as you click it, the color wheel of doom spazzes out and all of a sudden that contact card is no longer yours. (i'm a new mac user so I didn't realize instead of going to user&groups to edit my contact info. I could have just gone directly to the contacts-> make new card then in options select card-> make my card. This actually fixed the problem.

Another issue with the macbook I encountered is the fact the color load wheel keeps spazzing whenever i do anything ie opening browser, changing programs, etc. I was thinking there was an issue with lag on my computer. It wasn't until I had a full freeze of my mouse and keyboard that I checked the internet news and found this thread. The power button was the only useable option to fix the freeze. Closing the lid for a minute and opening did nothing. You have to hold down the power button. I am hoping it does not happen again. But already this is enough for me to want to return the new macbook pro.
