Sorry to inform you that the Categorise feature has been removed from the new version of Numbers 3.0.

There is a thread entitled "What has been lost from Numbers 3.0" which goes to great length about this.

    Regards,

    Simon.

I am having the same problem. Did they make it an ultra light version now or what? The new iWorks really *****.....to say the least. All my work of the past years is a f*** up now as I can't use my usually functions to manage my spreadsheets.

Hey Apple, you should have told us, this is really BAD BAD BAD. We hopy you hurry up to get us the functions back or do you want us finally to migrate to MS Office for Mac?

    Hi Kudunet,

Your Numbers 2.3 is still on your Mac, in a subfolder within Applications named iWork '09 or similar. You can use that.

If you've already opened documents in 3.0 and need to take them back to 2.3 just use this:

I miss Categorize too, but I now have started using Filter Table ... to get almost the same result in a different way.

Are there plans on adding this feature back into Numbers?

This support document describes the features Apple plans to reintroduce over the next few months.

Categorize by column does not seem to be on the list. See the workarounds thread for ways to get the same result in a different way.

I agree. I don't understand why Apple is dumbing down their software, while at the same time making their operating systems more complicated. Usually subsequent versions of apps are more robust. I've been such a long-time Apple devotee, yet my disappoint continues to grow ever since Job's passing. They just don't seem to have the leadership they need.

We're just fellow users here. If you want to communicate with Apple then in your menu go to Number > Provide Numbers Feedback and fire away.

For what it's worth there seem to be many of us who have long since moved on to Numbers 3, which has progressed quite a bit since this old thread was started, and never looked back. It's left out some features but added others.  I'm not sure I'd describe it as "dumbed down."  It's a very sophisticated application.

Thanks SG. Yeah, I know Apple will unlikely see my rant and would less likely care if they did. I was just venting among those I perceived to be like-minded. Numbers is still my go to spreadsheet app but I do believe it has fewer features and capabilities than it used to (at least the ones I used and appreciated).

The Categories features was dropped, and the ability to precisely print highly formatted documents with ease. Lots of other features have been added back over the years, though, and there is plenty of what I would consider improvements.

The story on the Pages side isn't as good, at least according to what I read in the discussions.  But Numbers 3 seems pretty good to me!
