Yes, this is very disappointing.

iMovie 10's resulting MP4 file plays "jerky" on my ATV3.

In iMovie '11 I always exported as MOV and then encoded externally to MP4.

Did Apple remove the ability to export as MOV in iMovie 10?

That would be a huge step backward.

You should still have the older iMovie version; if you can't work with the .mp4 file, you should be able to import it into the older version and use the Export settings of your choice from there. I don't care too much for the lack of functionality in the new version - it appears to be about fast processing and cloud-centric.

Surprised to see that the MP4 video exported from iMovie 10 does not play smoothly on my Apple TV, especially given the source video came from my iPhone 5.

I've only played with the new iMovie a couple of times, but was not impressed. I actually edit; I also layer videos, do special effects, green screen, etc, etc, so I will try the new version one more time, but for now, I prefer to stay with the older versions - I actually still use iMovie HD 06 as it is the only version that will process your video losslessly. In any case, in both of those versions, you have many options when you want to export, whereas the new version chooses it for you (and you have no idea what the settings are) - that makes it pretty much a non-starter for me.

This blows -- MP4 video output from iMovie 10 plays with an obvious stuttering or "jerky" playback that is not present in the original MOV videos from my iPhone 5.

Bummer that it looks like I need to recreate this project from scratch in iMovie 9.0.9 in order to export it as MOV to get a usable MP4 file.

Yes, there is....... (unless you've tried this??):

Go to File menu > Share > Export using Quicktime > In the pop up, choose to Quicktime Movie and click on Options > choose your settings (here is a screenshot of mine):

"Export Using Quicktime" is greyed-out and is not a selectable option. 😟

I just created a short movie in the new iMovie, exported as an .mp4, imported into iMovie 9.09 and was able to choose export to Quicktime - did you drag yours movie into your project library?

I'll try again - i didnt drag it in - i used the "import movie" function.

Importing it puts it in the timeline. Once you have it in the timeline (lower window area), drag it to your project library (upper left) - that was when the share/export option became available.

I also found that if I burn the mp4 movie to disc it plays back jerky on my TV using latest DVD player. Now I burn to disc using Toast 10 and all is OK. I burn using the blu Ray software. It seems every change in Mavericks (except iPhoto) is a step back in features. Very disapointing.

Back to the drawing board to re-do the entire project from scratch in iMovie 9.0.9.
