I can't reinitalise my hard drive

In the utility disc application the button to format the hd is not available. Its grey and I can't click on it. I searched everywhere on the net and nobody is talking about this problem. Can someone help?? Please ? T_T

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

You need to restart from an alternate system, such as a compatible Mac OS X 10.6 DVD.
