Also when I try to connect to a windows volume via smb that has worked before I upgraded to OS Maverick I now get the following error message....
"There was a problem connecting to the server"...URLs with the type SMB are not supported.....
YET...
When I use the same SMB address to connect to one of our Windows volumes here at work on a iMac running 10.7.5 and or before I updated the 10.8 machine to Maverick, this worked !!! Now why does it not ?😠
Help,,,, 😮
I have this same "smb not supported" problem having upgraded to OS X Mavericks. Trying to connect to smb servers but just get the error message "There was a problem connecting to the server. URLs with the type "smb:" are not supported". Have read and tried the 2 workarounds at http://cammodude.blogspot.com/2013/10/os-x-109-mavericks-workaround-for-smb.html and neither work. The CIFs workaround gives me "There was a problem connecting to the server. URLs with the type "cifs:" are not supported". The terminal nsmb.conf file workaround results with the same "URLs with the type "smb:" are not supported" message.
Hoping someone out there has some other suggestions... Are Apple working on an update for this problem? When can we expect a fix?
forgot to say - The AFP alternative does not work - I get: "There was a problem connecting to the server "servername". The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again." - yet the other machines running Lion can access the smb: server addresses fine.
My smb problem is now solved:
it turned out that it was an installation of Thursby software ADmitMac v6 on my system that was creating a conflict. Smb is now working fine following a deinstallation - if anyone else is struggling:
To remove ADmitMac, use the following uninstall utility:
/Library/Application Support/ADmitMac/Uninstall ADmitMac
It turns out this software is not compatible with OS X Mavericks: http://www.thursby.com/known-admitmac-issue-cannot-log-after-upgrading-mavericks .html
So if you removed the Thursby software, then will it work if you re- install it? Or is it a version compatibility issue? I have Thursby ADmIt Mac on my OS Maverick machine as well... I will check with Thursby software ,,, however our initial requirement for this was so that the Mac's would have a more robust connection to Active Directory... Does OS Maverick have that ? What was your original reason for using the Thursby product and will you need it moving forward with Maverick ?
Thanks
Hi - my laptop came from a predecessor at work - not sure what their original reason for ADmitMac was, and I don't have any experience of Active Directory I'm afraid. Because I didn't know what or why this software was on my machine to begin with, I don't imagine I will need it in future with Mavericks anyway.
As I understand it, ADmitMac is currently incompatible with Mavericks, so not sure if a re-install would work (I don't have the disk or admin account to re-download). Their website says "The current version of ADmitMac, v7, is NOT compatible with Mavericks and will not function after upgrading. Do not upgrade to Mavericks without upgrading or removing ADmitMac. The "Uninstall ADmitMac.app" can be found in the /Library/Application Support/ADmitMac folder.
We are completing final testing of new releases and will be sending notifications when upgrades are available.
...I couldn't find anything relating to v6 but guessing that is also incompatible as Mavericks connect to server is now working fine for me following the uninstall.
One thing i would add to anyone who might be stuck at this stage as I was - is that to find the uninstall app, I had to find the correct library folder.
