Q: Mavericks too slow

mavericks make make my macbook air 2011 two to third time slower!

    If you have an external drive do a clean install of Mavericks. This allows you to play when you have time but continue to work in your internal drive. There will be no remanants of older software and add-ons to remove.

     

    Once you are happy with your new setup, boot from the clean version and wipe the internal and clone it back.

    Just a quick tip to anyone that mey be following this topic this far (and probably is havving performance issues on Mavericks that may be caused by older installed SW/3rd party system utilities):

    As I realized on my last post, event though I successfully executed the SoundFlower complete uninstall instructions, there were still some bits left behind (and the same happened with other sw as well)...

     

    So, I found an Application called "iFileX" which presents a GUI for se4arching on all FS of a given disk. This helped me a lot on finding all that bits that were left behind and removing them.

     

    Just be aware that you should always run through the steps of the uninstall instructions before any attemp to manually removing files with this (or any other way of finding and removing files associated with a installed software)...

    I couldn't live without AppCleaner (http://www.freemacsoft.net/appcleaner/) for cleanly uninstalling Mac apps.  It's also useful for seeing what additional files have been installed as a result of installing a product (e.g. Google and Adobe often litter you system with a surprisingly large amount of extra apps that you may not wish to keep).  AppCleaner may not help with SoundFlower but it might be worth trying (AppCleaner is free).

    All the usual caveats apply, backup before you modify the system, delete the items (or move them to another disk or folder if you are worried about deleting the wrong thing) but ensure the originals are gone or updated.

    Use the Finders "Go menu > Go to Folder…" to open the hidden ~/Library (your users library).

    Reboot for the system changes to take effect

     

    I'm trimming the report back to the items I think are worth looking into…

    These have been discontinued by Apple since Mac OS 10.4. They are responsible for making changes at a system level. Remove them all or spend time ensuring ALL related software is up to date. You need a very good reason to have anything installed in here.

     

    Kernel Extensions:

    Inside /Library/Extensions/

    These also load third party code, but they insert it into the 'core' of the OS. These can be safe, however you must ensure the related tools or apps are up to date, otherwise the system is basically built upon quicksand. Remove them all & see if the OS works better.

     

    Launchd jobs: several types

    LaunchAgents          - Stored in /Library/LaunchAgents

    LaunchDaemons      - Stored in /Library/LaunchDaemons

    User LaunchAgents  - Stored in ~/Library/LaunchAgents

     

    These are all background jobs, they are not necessarily bad, but if they are loading old code it could be doing untold damage to the performance & stability of the entire OS. Focus on the System level jobs (the ones inside /Library - the system level) also look at 'failed' jobs.

     

    EtreCheck gives a status on launchd jobs…

    [loaded]                  - a running job

    [not loaded]            - jobs that are set not to run, basically harmless, remove them unless you plan to use the associated software (if it is up to date)

    [failed]                   - jobs in a crashed or unknown state, it could be forking processes or using all the system resources, remove these.

     

    User login items:

    Applications and helpers that are managed inside 'Systems Preferences > Users and groups > Login Items tab'.

    These are loaded at the 'User level', consider removing all of them whilst you troubleshoot.  When you decide to re-add them ensure the software is up to date.

     

    3rd Party Preference Panes: & Internet Plug-ins:

    /Library/PreferencePanes/ and ~/Library/PreferencePanes/

    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ and ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/

    Once again these items all must be up to date, or remove them from your system. If the prefpanes manage additional software use the uninstaller or see the developers site for uninstall instructions.

     

    Read the list of Internet plug-ins carefully, there are often duplicate Flash player versions that won't help stability, it's just wasted space too.

    Don't forget to also update Safari's extensions in it's preferences (if you have any).


    Virtual Memory Statistics

    How much memory is being used for applications & services on the computer.

    The critical items to look at are:

    page-ins          - writing files from disk in to memory (this is completely normal)

    page-outs        - writing memory to disk. This is a slow process, it's a sign your machine has run out of RAM.

     

    Your memory usage looks good, especially considering you have been running for over a day, 0 page-outs indicates you have not ran out of RAM in that time period.

     

    If you have specific issues check for similar sounding threads, or ask here, this should help clean up the old software.

    Thank you for your help.  I notice that I keep getting this error in console:

    It records the error every 15 seconds or so.  Any ideas?

    mDNSResponder is also known as 'Bonjour', a.k.a, 'zeroconf'. It is generally required for the sharing services that appear in the Finder sidebar or apps like iTunes (home sharing etc).

     

    I think you have a device on your network that may have changed it's 'bonjour name' and now this Mac is trying to re-add the new mDNS record but it clashes with an old one. The simplest solution is to reboot EVERYTHING on your local network.

     

    It's also a good idea to give Mac's unique name on the local network, look inside the sharing section of the System Preferences.

     

     

    Personally I don't think this isn't much to worry about, clean up the other items & see if it remains an issue.

    Try disabling  The HDD turn off option on the Power saver area . It worked for me when i got all slow on maverics upgrade. (on my iMac 2012 version)

    Interesting, maybe Mavericks sleeps the HDD quicker than Mountain Lion did?

    Hello, and thanks for suggesting the safe reboot some two weeks ago. It helped but now I still have tremendous slowdowns when, for example, opening oe of the Office programs or one of the new Keynote or Numbers or even closing iTunes.  Not to mention, Mail is acting very weird, mixing folders and retreiving only some of the emails I ask him to fetch in the search bar.

    Safe boot doesn't actually fix anything on your system. It merely turns off all the third party software.

    You need to actually get rid of some of the outdated software or make sure everything is updated before anything will change.

    Your issues could be any due to any of those items above!

    The Mac is running out of RAM probably because you have too many crashed and failed background jobs.

    What is StartOuc? It's using a very old way to run - remove or update it. 

     

    Cleanup:

    All the usual caveats apply, backup before you modify the system, delete the items (or move them to another disk or folder if you are worried about deleting the wrong thing) but ensure the originals are gone or updated.

    Use the Finders "Go menu > Go to Folder…" to open the hidden ~/Library (your users library).

    Reboot for the system changes to take effect.

     

    How to find updates:

    The critical launchd jobs & kernel extensions use reverse domain notation e.g.

    com.logmein.hamachi.plist means look at http://logmein.com for updates (if you don't recognize it removing it may be appropriate)

     

    In short: You want to try to update or remove all the system level items.

    • Update or remove the StartupItems (ideally via the app's uninstallers)
    • Update or remove the Kernel Extensions (ideally via the app's uninstallers)
    • Update the software associated with ALL the launchd system jobs or remove it.
    • Teamviewer has 3 [failed] background jobs running on the system - Remove or update it.
    • Update or remove the failed Google Contact Sync Agent (in your ~/Library/LaunchAgents/)
    • Update all the login items & pref panes & internet plugins …
    • Use the info below to update or remove all the other installed software.

     

     

    Background info

    Startup Items: Stored in /Library/StartupItems/

    Startup Items have been discontinued by Apple since Mac OS 10.4. They are responsible for making changes at a system level. Remove them all or spend time ensuring ALL related software is up to date. You need a very good reason to have anything installed in here. The developers are ignoring Apple guidelines by installing these - not a good sign.

     

    Kernel Extensions: Stored in /Library/Extensions/

    Kernel Extensions also load third party code, but they insert it into the 'core' of the OS. These can be safe, however you must ensure the related tools or apps are up to date, otherwise the system is basically built upon quicksand. Remove them all & see if the OS works better.

     

    Launchd jobs: several types

    LaunchAgents          - Stored in /Library/LaunchAgents

    LaunchDaemons       - Stored in /Library/LaunchDaemons

    User LaunchAgents   - Stored in ~/Library/LaunchAgents

     

    These are all background jobs, they are not necessarily bad, but if they are loading old code it could be doing untold damage to the performance & stability of the entire OS. Focus on the System level jobs (the ones inside /Library - the system level) also remove ['failed'] jobs.

     

    EtreCheck gives a status on launchd jobs…

    [loaded]                  - a running job

    [not loaded]            - jobs that are set not to run, basically harmless, remove them unless you plan to use the associated software (if it is up to date)

    [failed]                    - jobs in a crashed or unknown state, it could be forking processes or using all the system resources, remove these.

     

    User login items:

    Applications and helpers that are managed inside 'Systems Preferences > Users and groups > Login Items tab'.

    These are loaded at the 'User level', consider removing all of them whilst you troubleshoot.  When you decide to re-add them ensure the software is up to date.

     

    3rd Party Preference Panes: & Internet Plug-ins:

    /Library/PreferencePanes/ and ~/Library/PreferencePanes/

    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ and ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/

    Once again these items all must be up to date, or remove them from your system. If the prefpanes manage additional software use the uninstaller or see the developers site for uninstall instructions. You can also right click to remove 3rd party preference panes in System preferences

     

    Read the list of Internet plug-ins carefully, there are often duplicate Flash player versions that won't help stability, it's just wasted space too.

    Don't forget to also update Safari's extensions in it's preferences (if you have any).

     

    Re-run EtreCheck after cleaning up to see if items have returned (some apps will reload the background jobs when re-opened, so either update or remove the software).

     

     

     

    Hope that isn't too daunting, the OS should be better if there are less old items running at the system level.

    Your preciseness, courtesy and speed in reply are very much appreciated.  I tried to address the issues in the technical manner you pointed out and here is the latest EtreCheck read.  It "feels" running smoother but I may have to dig further.  Especially, Chrome now (i'm running with firefox today) became a long and narrow window on my desktop and cannot move it resize it or anything.  But this happened well before I did any change that you suggested.  It may be unrelated though. Thoughts?)

    Has the window gone away now?

    I assume you have closed Chrome & rebooted? You may need to screenshot this if it still exists, I'm unclear what you could be seeing.

    Do you use Blackberry devices with this Mac? You have a driver USB installed at the system level, if you don't use it see if Blackberry have removal instructions. If you do use it make sure that it is updated & it says it supports 10.9.

     

    How about soundflower? Do you use that? Version 1.6.6 is the latest release, but it doesn't mention that it supports 10.9.

     

    It is probably installed for another application, like Audiohijack or MaxMSP? If you don't use it & don't know what it is download the installer & use the uninstall script.

    You should probably remove the 2 failed jobs (or get the related apps updated)

    It's Spotify & Google contact sync (never used it).

     

    Open this via the Finders 'Go menu > Go to Folder…' enter  ~/Library/LaunchAgents and remove the 2 files

    com.google.GoogleContactSyncAgent.plist com.spotify.webhelper.plist. You will want to open the both apps if you use them otherwise whatever task the background job did won't happen anymore.

     

    Let us know how that effects things.

    I do not know if you're still having issues, but my macbook took about a week or so to "settle down". I had all of the horrible lagging and crashing that everyone was experiencing. So, what I did was just keep my macbook closed for a day or...three..and then to my suprise when I opened it up and let it load, the lagging was gone.

    Well I'll give it a try, because I'm so ****** off, I've had several kernel panics and Mavericks is incredibly slow, so slow that when I see the rotating sphere (almost all the time doh) I'd like to smash it in the floor.
