All but the SMC have been tried. I'm restarting now to see if the SMC option worked.
20 minutes later and the pinwheel is still spinning.
I just tried safe mode and the status bar comes up but disappears after a third of the way

Does this happen in Safe Mode also? Make sure there is nothing connected to your comp when troubleshooting (except for keyboard & mouse).
If you are still under warranty and/or have AppleCare, call them. Let them deal w/it. Otherwise, take your comp to your nearest AS or an AASP. Diagnostic testing is FREE!
I haven't been able to get into safe mode yet. After the 20 minutes I shut it down with the power button. Then I tried doing safe mode again and that's when the status bar came up briefly. Now I'm back to the mindless spinning pinwheel
