Q: Maps shows no map in window-mode

When I use Maps on my iMac (9,1) sometimes the map disappears in WIndow-mode leaving me with an empty map with only a dot for my location and the destination. I restart maps, I restart the Finder but nothing works. The only thing that works is rebooting the Mac. This problem also appears on my Macbook Pro (5,4) After rebooting the Mac(s) things work nicely for quite some time, before starting all over again.

Strange thing is that as soon as I choose fullscreen, the map is shown immediately. Returning to Window-mode gives me an empty window again.

What's happening here??

Just change the language order in preferences language & region, make any mainstream language your default.

Have followed the advice on languages - Maps' problem resolved! Thanks a lot.

As soon as I do that, my language changes from Dutch to English systemwide. Primary language is Dutch now, secondary is English. Your suggestion may work, but I want to keep the dutch language on my Mac.

Language change didn't work for me. English was the only language in my list of preferred languages. Since my location is in Korea, I added Korean, and tried changing the order of preferred languages. No change.

I get an empty grid with no maps in all views. If I search for directions, I get a route displayed in the grid, with distance markers, but no place names, and no map. Zooming out to the global view from my current location in Korea shows some names for a few places in China at some levels of magnification, which then disappear. No maps.

Apparently there is more than one issue with the application.

There appears some connection with an iTunes problem too. As soon as the map problem occurs, there is also a problem with iTunes not displaying track information. The music is playing but there is only an Apple logo displayed where track information usually is shown. As soon as I turn iTunes to fullscreen mode, track information is displayed again. Like the "map problem" the only solution is rebooting the Mac. This problem persists on both my Macs.

I'm in Korea and experiencing the exact same problem as you. Perhaps the bug is location based?

I'm also in Ansan, if your handle reflects your location...  I don't know how maps works, but I wouldn't be surprised if the problem had to do with location or language. I see that people with Spanish and Dutch in their language preferences were able to solve the problem.

For Onderkoffer, I don't have any issues with track information in iTunes, I just checked.  And rebooting the Mac doesn't help me with the map issue, the empty grid is the permanent condition of the App from the time it opens.

At least we are gathering some information here.  Anybody else with a theory?

Has anyone of you maybe installed the Logitech Control Center software?? I read it may cause problems with Mavericks since Logitech has not yet updated their drivers.. Maybe something to try..

I just found out I had version 3.6.0 running of the LCC software. Version 3.9.0, updated for Maverick, is available now on the Logitech site. I installed it and I hope it solves the problem.

    I'm not running LCC.

This afternoon I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mavericks on my circa 1998 MacBook Pro. The Maps app works fine in all modes with either Korean or English chosen as the preferred language. My machines are connected to the net by wifi.  So, it seems that preferred langauge is not necessarily the key to the problem.

Could be a coincidence but since I removed my old Logitech driver and installed the new one the problem with Maps and iTunes didn't happen again on both of my machines.  Apart from changing the driver, I changed nothing else on both machines.

I'll keep monitoring it for a while though :-)

These are my locationsettings by the way:

I'm working for a few days now with the new LCC driver from Logitech and since I'm working with it I had no problems anymore with Maps and iTunes. It just works perfect now!

I had the same issue.  No map, no satellite imagery - just a dot and a grid.

I went to check my language settings and as soon as the language option box opened the map and imagery appeared - I didn't even change any settings.

    Wierd.

Nope. I thought and I hoped I solved the problem, but the problem appeared again this evening. I noticed I lost track information while playing music. Only an Apple logo was displayed again. And again, there also wasn't a map available in the Maps app. Only a Home and Destination pin.

So somehow there appears to be a connection to these two programs. What do they have in common while their active? Quicktime?

    Anyone?

And again, the only solution was rebooting my Mac... :S
