Q: multiple visits to apple store for wi-fi support. still no connectivity.

Ok my 10.6.8 macbook pro will connect to the internet via wifi SOMETIMES. When it actually does it can only hold onto the connection for anywhere from one minute or longer than an hour. It will defiantly lose connection if I close and reopen it. and at this point i can barely ever connect to my internet at home. This started happening lightly a few months ago. Eventually I got sick of running to Starbucks to use their internet (anywhere other than my apartment will generally connect better but still will lose connection). Another note, when i lose connection ill go turn off airport and can never turn it back on. a reboot will fix this 1/4 of the time.  Setting up a new location has worked for me for about a day not back to nothing.

I went to the genius bar last week. My network settings were all reset. I couldn't connect to the apple store wifi until my settings were reset. I thought my problem was solved until I got home and could not connect. I went to the apple store again a few days ago and was told wiping my drive and restoring from a backup MIGHT work. then whatever genius made a test partition and told me to go home and restore. Turns out that test partition was left on so me resetting from a backup really didn't reset anything. so AGAIN to the genius bar yesterday where i have them reformat my macbook on site. After sitting there for four hours playing Candy Crush my macbook was successfully reformatted and I'm told my airport should work. nope. my issue is EXACTLY the same as it was before reformat. At this point I have a 50' ethernet cable running out of my roommates room through the Apartment so i can get some work done. Where do i go next? Would going back to the genius bar maybe solve anything? I called my ISP who had me make a new location again. worked for about an hour then lost connection and the issue started up again.

Help?! Thanks

Disconnect all devices from the computer then do the following:

Boot up from your Snow Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.

Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.

Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.

Once this process has been completed restart your computer and repair permissions directly from Disk Utility.

If Disk Utility is unable to complete the repair, you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior, Techtool PRO (not Deluxe) or Drive Genius.

    Try the basics first:

Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.

Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.

    System Preferences>Network

    Click the Assist Me button.

In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.
