Massive problem with audio interface

Hi there.

I recently bought a brandnew iMac 27" Haswell i7. I encountered problems with my Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 audio interface. These are buzzing, clicking and noise immediately or after 3 minutes or so. I tried everything, re-installed the driveres several times, nothing, really nothing worked.

Then I bought an RME Babyface audio interface - and guess what? It's the same problem. I also have a massive sound noise after some minutes or the recording channel in Garage Band drops completely.

What is wrong here? I already tried using a different power plug, tried all USB ports, turned off WiFi, HDD sleep mode, etc. Nothing worked.

Do you have an idea?

I appeciate your help,

Adrian.

Upodate

Upgrading to new Apogee beta firmware didnt do anything. Still the same problems (dropouts, dist) when listening to a new recording. After this I installed the new Maverick beta dev version and did the same recording procedure and the problems disappeared completely. Now this needs to be tested more to be sure but there is definitely improvements in the coming Maverick version.

biggusDikkus, when you write the issue could come from core audio, i changed my old 2007 imac for 2013 one (the new one) i noticed the internal microphone i used for recording some acoustic videos was muuuch better with the 2007 ..

i cannot use the microphone of the new one .. sounds terrible, especially the guitar, it wouldnt be a problem if i could at least use an external card and microphone .. what i cannot do ! i will send back this **** imac and go back to windows .. at least for 1680 euros you get something decent

From the thread on Gearslutz. http://www.gearslutz.com/board/music-computers/877537-potential-audio-problem-ne w-imacs-4.html

OK, here's the update!

As some people have already deduced, the problems detailed in this thread have two separate causes:

1) The "Fusion Drive" issue, affecting new iMacs with a Fusion Drive installed.

2) The "USB Audio" issue, also affecting the iMacs as well as other new "Haswell" computers like MacBook Pros / Airs.

The Fusion Drive problem has been addressed by Apple directly, and the upcoming version of OS X - 10.9.2 - includes a fix. As mentioned above, there is a beta version available now, but you must be a member of their developer program to obtain it legally.

For some people the OS X update will fix their audio interface problems completely. Others with "Haswell" Macs may still be experiencing disconnects/distortion due to the separate USB Audio issue. We recently received code that addresses this issue, which we have integrated into the firmware for the Duet and Quartet. Today we're opening up betas of this firmware, available through our support team. You can find instructions on how to get the beta here:

Apogee Electronics > Apogee Support & Product Downloads

Hope this gives some clarity on the whole situation, and many thanks for the patience of everyone who has run into this issue with an Apogee interface!

For your Information, I got the following support email by Allen & Heath which confirms the USB3-issue and that this is something the manufacturers have to take care of:

"

Thanks for the message.

We have identified issues with some, not all recent USB3 mac models.

The software team are working on a fix and it will be rolled out in a future firmware update.

I'm sorry I cannot give you a timescale for release but please be assured we are aware on the issue and working on a fix to resolve it."

I installed the 10.9.2 beta that was linked from this forum. Prior to this, I could not record audio successfully in any application -- Pro Tools, Camtasia, ScreenFlow, GarageBand. Today, I seem to be able to record in Camtasia, ScreenFlow, and GarageBand but NOT in Pro Tools. I tried recording to the internal drive as well as setting the disk allocation folders to an external USB 3 drive. In Pro Tools, I am getting the same errors as before--underflow, overrun. So this 10.9.2 bet has NOT improved my experience with Pro Tools, but I am hopeful that I can continue to record audio through my Mbox 3 while creating screencasts in Camtasia and ScreenFlow as it is important to my work in education. If I can record and edit audio in GarageBand for now, it will suffice as I am essentially only recording speech. If I were using this workstation for music sessions it would be a disaster.

My rig:

Late 2013 iMac, 27", i7 3.5, 1TB Fusion Drive, 16GB RAM

Mbox 3 Pro

Pro Tools 11.1

Anyone else have success in Pro Tools with the 10.9.2 beta?

I found one fix, not sure if it will solve problems but solved mine. I am like most here with a relatively new iMac from last year times of RAM fast processor and after upgrading to Mavericks have experienced exactly the issues listed in this thread. I spent an exhaustive time looking for any irregularities ended up reinstalling the system added a new user and talking with folks at Apple.

I finally found by simply deleting the application Boom (Globaldelight) solved every single audio problem I was having. There seems to be pretty large group of people using Boom experiencing the same things. The application seems to suck up processor and thereby causes delays and other audio issues. I have loved using this sound app, but it is simply not worth it given the audio issues system wide it causes.

Hope this helps,

Dylan
