Q: Massive problem with audio interface

Hi there.

I recently bought a brandnew iMac 27" Haswell i7. I encountered problems with my Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 audio interface. These are buzzing, clicking and noise immediately or after 3 minutes or so. I tried everything, re-installed the driveres several times, nothing, really nothing worked.

Then I bought an RME Babyface audio interface - and guess what? It's the same problem. I also have a massive sound noise after some minutes or the recording channel in Garage Band drops completely.

What is wrong here? I already tried using a different power plug, tried all USB ports, turned off WiFi, HDD sleep mode, etc. Nothing worked.

Do you have an idea?

I appeciate your help,

Adrian.

    Hey BonJamesBon,

It probably wasn't switching before and now it is. Please make sure you call back AppleCare and tell them:

    1. The issue hasn't been fixed

    2. That there is proof that almost all USB and FIREWIRE audio interfaces that record or playback audio are not working because of the fusion drive. There is definitive proof of it just in this thread alone and that a lot of people are very upset. Tell them about this thread and that there are dozens of other 2013 FD users saying the same on other websites.

    3. Ask them if they can give you status update on how Apple is fixing this in a firmware update.

    4. If they tell that you should return it for a SSD iMac, tell them that is absolutely ridiculous!

    Thanks!

There's another thread adressing this same issue at Gearslutz.com, so it's all about the sound. Here's a link to one of the end pages, and if you scroll to the bottom, one of the guys from Apogee is talking about the Fusion Drive not really being the cause, but rather a conflict with the Haswell chip:

    http://www.gearslutz.com/board/music-computers/877537-potential-audio-problem-ne w-imacs-9.html

I wonder if everyone here having a problem has the latest iMac with that chip? Or is there ANYONE with a non Haswell/2012 model that's having the same problem? It looks like NONE of the 2012 iMacs are having a problem.

    PAGE 6 (on this forum):

As I am a customer for years now, buy all my computers @ apple, I must say... Its for a reason.

I could swap my iMac with a full SSD Version. And voilà: All the problems are gone.

I tried everything. So to say.

    The only solutions are:

    - Get a new iMac / replace it, go to an apple shop and tell your story

I will remain a good customer, and any penny I may spent more than a windows pc, was worth it once more!

    - Install it like mentioned above. DON'T use the Fusion Drive

      external Thunderbolt Drive

or new Partitioning for your Drive

    - Apple provides a fix one day

We are not the mass market, be aware

    DAV3038:

    Hello everybody,

Yesterday, I received my new iMac 27' (256 SSD). I used it a few hours with Apogee Duet 1 (Firewire with thunderbolt adaptor) and IT WORKS !!!

No issues when listening a song in iTunes, Youtube..., no issues when recording guitars and voices with GarageBand.

i'm not about to declare a victory, I'll make others tests today and in the coming days but I'm confident.

So, for those who have issues with Fusion Drive (I returned my first iMac with Fusion Drive) AND Firewire Duet, SSD (and I think classic HD too, I read it on others forum) works fine.

Unfortunately, I know there is also issues with USB 3...

^ Could be Fusion Drive AND the new Haswell Chips (Both i5 and i7) not working right...

But that's not likely the case...

    1. Audio manufactuers are saying it is the Fusion Drive.

    2. SSD 2013 iMac users (with the Haswell Chip) are reporting they are NOT having issues with their audio interfaces... if you partition (split the FD) audio interfaces work again...

    3. AppleCare also told me to return mine and buy a SSD iMac based on a Gearsultz post... So unprofessional...

Good question on the 2012 models... Very interested to know if there are or are not issues with them.

After a week of going through 3 Audio Interfaces and a number of solutions, I think that I have finally determined that this is not a disk drive issue.   It is a USB-3 issue.   And it appears that from the Windows world, this issue has been around for a while from the Ivy Bridge era.

Apparently the Presonus bulletin board came up with a suggestion of downgrading the USB 3 Controllers to USB 2 by removing drivers for USB 3.  I don't know how to do that on an iMac, nor would I want to make the significant investment in my Haswell iMac depreciate, since I bought the device for speed.  However, I know that many from Apogee, Presonus, Focusrite and Apple look at these boards and wonder if any of them can offer some insight into this problem.

I have been unable to make any music at all since buying my Mac for all of the reasons noted above by everyone else.  I have put off buying Logic X until this situation is resolved.   Below are a few sites that I have been following in regards to this issue:

    http://forums.presonus.com/posts/list/33427.page

    http://us.hardware.info/news/35295/haswell-has-usb-30-issues-with-14-out-of-22-t ested-usb-drives

(This one was about disk drives falling asleep and losing their state.  I don't know if it relates to Audio Connections as well).

    http://www.gearslutz.com/board/music-computers/877537-potential-audio-problem-ne w-imacs-9.html

(Don Spacht from Apogee essentially explains the USB3 issue that his company and Apple are working on).

Hope this helps someone.  I am pretty close to returning my iMac since music production was a major reason for buying this top of the line device.

Ive been 2 months without sound now.  I am starting to think that this is not a software related issue as an update should have been released now for such a major issue.  Given that this is happening over a vast range of 3rd part AI manufacturers, I would have to say it is down to the hardware apple has used, especially in the new 2013 macs (late 2013 reelase Haswell processors)

I got this error message last time I tried to problem solve with Apple tech online:

If anyone can make head or tails of this please do explain as the answer could well be in here somewhere.  Yes, I have given this to Apple and to Motu who I use and still haven't heard anything.  My Motu tech support person was spot on with reply times, but I don't hear anything these days which is a pitty, not even for an update with "still working on it" etc .... lame

Just saw this posting and it's from a User with a MacMini

    "

    Hi to you all,

after installing the last OS, I cannot heard the audio through my audio interface or my monitor (screen's speakers); only through the internal speakers of the Mac...

I tried in 'MIDI Audio Settings' and I cannot configure any parameters... I also tried to re-install the drivers of my interface and... nothing. I don't know what to do.

Please, help me. Thanks in advance!

Mac mini, OS X Mavericks (10.9)"

So maybe it is Mavericks related afterall

This post from someone on Gearslutz, who seems rather sure it's the Fusion Drive with a later Mavericks update. His remedy is to Un-Fuse your drive (clone first as aways cause things will be lost) using terminal. What have you got to lose if your on the edge of returning it anyway. Dying to know if this works. Here's the post:

    Gentlemen.... gentlemen..... gentlemen!

Pages and pages of tearing at hair and the knashing of teeth in this forum.

The "solution" -- at least a workable solution for now -- is right there in front of you, if you care to reach for it.

If you have an iMac or Mac Mini, running Mavericks, AND

You have a "fusion drive" installed...

...Just "UN-fuse" the fusion drive using Terminal. This should solve your problems for now, and get you back to work.

I believe SOMEthing in Apple's "CORE storage" technology is the root cause of the problem. It _might_ have something to do with the way fusion "moves around" blocks of data (not "files" per se, but blocks which contain files, or _parts of_ files) from the SSD portion of the "fused drive" to the HDD and vice versa. This is unknown, Apple usually doesn't reveal exactly what they "fixed".

At some point in the future, Apple may tweak fusion to correct this issue, but no telling when that fix will be forthcoming.

In any case, it is -fusion- which is mucking up your hardware and getting into the way of regular production.

    IMPORTANT:

You should know that "UN-fusing" a fusion drive will destroy all the data on BOTH the SSD and HDD drives of the fusion "combo". So you must back up first.

I STRONGLY SUGGEST that you use a "cloning" app (such as either CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper) to do your backup. You'll need a bootable external backup from which to do the UN-fusing, in any case.

Once your backup is made, boot from it.

Now, use Terminal to "UN-fuse" the fusion drive. I have not had the need to do this, because I never liked the fusion concept and steered clear of it when I bought my new Mac Mini. But there are several websites out there that describe what you need to do, so investigate that and prepare first. You will need to have the ability to take written notes.

I believe the basics are thus:

    - Use Disk Utility to identify the "names" of the SSD and HDD drives.

    - Using Terminal, issue the appropriate commands (inserting the drive names you obtained using DU)

Once done, you will have "freestanding" SSD and HDD drives.

Now you need to rebuild using the backup that you created.

You will want to put onto the SSD:

    - The OS

    - Apps

    - Your account(s)

    - Perhaps some data (depends on how large the SSD is - you want to be sure to keep about 25% of it free)

    And onto the HDD:

    - Data that's not used much, or does not depend on speed for access (such as stored music files)

    - Perhaps use the HDD for your "working drive"

I'm going to take a _guess_ that although 3rd-party "patches" may be available from some audio equipment suppliers, they many not cover all equipment, and may or may not work. Looks like this has to be solved at "Apple's level"...

    A side note:

I believe the problems first arose when Apple introduced Mavericks (10.9), is that correct?

I've read that something (not known exactly what, but SOMEthing) in fusion got "changed" between 10.8 and 10.9. I sense that therein, lies the problem....

    Side note #2:

Remember that even if you UNfuse a drive today, you can ALWAYS GO BACK in the future, when Apple gets around to fixing the problem. Of course, you would have to back up BOTH SSD and HDD first, and then "merge" the contents manually after the re-fusion of the drives was accomplished...

Yup, however, splitting your drives will make your iMac run slower. FD out performs SSD or HDD alone. Your iMac will run like a 5200 HDD, slower than the two iMacs on the bottom of this video:

I assume you meant 7200 HDD, since that is what is in the iMac. It seems like it should be somewhat faster with the System, Libraries, and Apps in the SSD that with everything on a 7200 HDD

In reading more about the fusion drive, I am less thrilled about the amount of data churning that must happen when you are using very large files, given that it always writes data to the SSD until it fills up the 4G that it tries to leave free, then spills over to writing data to the HDD, then after about 20 seconds ( according to the ARSTechnica article) starts moving other chunks of data over to the HDD so that it has the 4G of free space on the SSD again.

I would really be interested in the details of any experience someone has had with spliting the fusion drive.

This is not a Fusion Drive Issues for the last time it is a USB audio issue and a Mavericks core audio issue, I've read apple are aware of it but a fix is yet to appear. For now it seems it's impossible to use anything on a haswell chip through usb successfully.

    Disappointed indeed.

from what I have seen, there appear to be multiple problems....for the noise and audio distortion that I have, I see it consistently when booted from the fusion drive and never when booted from an external drive or non fusion partition

In my case my audio sources are a USB headphone and a Signalink USB interface to a ham radio. I have not seen a problem when using an external drive or non fusion partition.  Others have apparently still had some issues which may be specific to the USB interface and their equipment

    Dear AlexGowers,

With respect for your opinion, I indeed have a problem related to the Fusion Drive. I’m not saying that the USB3 interface is working properly. But, the fact that my audio interface also can use FireWire, and when I’m using it have exactly the same problem as I have when I use the USB, my conclusion is that my, (and many others in this thread) problem is related to the Fusion Drive in Mavericks. Before I upgraded my late 2013 iMac from Mountain Lion the audio interface was working as it should with FireWire and USB.

I’ve seen that it also is solved for these that have split the FD into two drives, or used an external drive to boot from.

There is only one week before holiday begin, so my hope that Apple will solve this before christmas decrease for each day. The real downside with Apple is their bad customer feedback. They don’t comment, or admit they have a problem, and that makes me mad.

Quick Update.   Took my new iMac to the Apple Store and discussed the situation.  They could not find anything wrong with the machine.    They are very interested in the findings and suggested that I use my old Firewire Audio Interface to see if that worked.  I had to pick up a Thunderbolt Firewire converter and pull up my house to find an electrical adapter for the Presonus, but I did what they told me to do.  I also looked at the Presonus website and was disheartened when I saw Presonus stating on their web page that the Inspire GT would not work under Mavericks.   They are wrong !   Although I had a little more noise when compared to the Focusrite, the Inspire actually worked well with none of the cackling sounds and I was able to work for about 4 hours.   The cackling sound occurred once in the 4 hour period, but I attributed that to my overloading a distortion effect on a guitar.  The bass was clean and I had no problems.   One thing that was also interesting was the fact that I had no latency issues despite using a Firewire-Thunderbolt converter.

The experiment today showed, at least from this effort (N of 1 may not mean much), that it was not the entire board that is a problem, but more likely than not, faulty USB Audio drivers in Mavericks.

This may also address another issue that I have seen posted here and elsewhere, that that the USB Haswell problem continues on both platforms.  I was able to use a Seagate 3 TB back up drive without incident this morning.  At a speed of approximately 3 gb/minute I was able to back up my entire FD hard drive without a glitch.  I am also using another to run Time Machine.   There was a problem last year in Windows Land with the Ivy Bridge / USB 3 ports.   From what I read, there was and possibly still continues to be a problem with the down conversion from USB3 to USB2 devices.   The Seagate drive is a full USB3 machine.  My Focusrite Audio Interface is USB2.  I also noted an issue with an Andrea USB Headset (USB2).   It is possible that the same USB3->USB2 down conversion issue is happening with the Haswell / USB3 combo also.

I am no expert on any of this, but the finding of my Thunderbolt interface working without a glitch, even on a down conversion from Firewire 400 to Thunderbolt is reassuring that I won't have to take back my machine permanently.   I have no idea how the interaction with FD drives and the USB3 sound are related.  But the fact that most of the complaints have been Haswell related recently, but also interspersed with complaints from people using earlier iMacs and Macbook Pros leads me to think that the relationship is mostly a USB driver issue.

My only hope is that someone from audio land give the folks at Seagate a call because they seem to be doing something incredibly well over there.   Their 3 TB backup drive is compatible with Firewire 800, USB 3 and Thunderbolt.  And to make things interesting, I have just read that Microsoft also solved the USB 3 problem with Windows 8.  However, to be honest, I would not give up my Mac for a Windows 8 machine.

I am very happy for this forum and others.  Without it, I probably wouldn't have conducted my own experiment this morning.  I would also like to give a shout out to my local Apple store.  They were very helpful.
