Q: Massive problem with audio interface

Hi there.

I recently bought a brandnew iMac 27" Haswell i7. I encountered problems with my Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 audio interface. These are buzzing, clicking and noise immediately or after 3 minutes or so. I tried everything, re-installed the driveres several times, nothing, really nothing worked.

Then I bought an RME Babyface audio interface - and guess what? It's the same problem. I also have a massive sound noise after some minutes or the recording channel in Garage Band drops completely.

What is wrong here? I already tried using a different power plug, tried all USB ports, turned off WiFi, HDD sleep mode, etc. Nothing worked.

Do you have an idea?

I appeciate your help,

Adrian.

    Guys, I tried EVERYTHING, absolutely.

Thanks god I thought about removing the aggregate in "Audio MIDI Setup", and re-created it, everything back to normal. Now it's working smoothly and perfect again.

    OSX El Capitan

    Scarlett 2i2

Hopefully it will help you to fix this issue!

It was probably some issue related to sample rates and the aggregate got corrupted.

Changing the sampling rate to 48000 brought it back online right away. I found that in the Audio Midi Setup app in Utilities. Finally. That dropping has been a problem for a while.

What does this mean "removed the aggregate?"

I tried removing everything, and allowing things to repopulate automatically, and that did nothing to help, I was getting degrading crap within 5 minutes.

Well, I tried to sneak my old Mbox 2 into my MBPro with Mavericks - the new computer  wouldn't load Snow Leopard, which my 2010 MBpro worked beautifully with PT 8LE.

Unfortunately, I'm getting the pops and noise after 3-4 minutes at 44.1 or 48 khz. However, I can still use the MBox to record, which is a boon, since I can pull the output audio from the MBPro itself (I'm still unsure whether to upgrade to PT 11/12 with my MBox SN for $200; watching the comments to see how it's working).

Only using the installed Garage Band right now, but same static appears on youtube and iTunes.

New MBpro mid-2014 1 tb ssd OSX 10.9.5 (nothing later will run the MBox at all, and nothing earlier will run Dragon Dictate 5, which I need).

Have this issue on 27" iMac late 2013 OS 10.11.3 with 1TB SSD (not fusion).......... originally discovered issue on an Apogee Quartet, confirmed issue was likely with the iMac after trying Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 with same issues (back on the Quartet now).  Strangely, I have a Musical Fidelity headphone amp with USB that does not exhibit the behavior.

Have done SMC, PRAM resets and Safe Boot, unplugged all other peripherals, no luck.

Did anyone with these issues on HHD or SSD find a solution?

Hey Biggus - I have recently experienced the exact same symptoms as you with my behringer UMC202 - worked fine before upgrade to el capitan. Works fine on my Windows 10 laptop - but same symptoms as you on my iMac. Did you ever get a solution?

    Hi,

after couple of hours of investigating, reading tons of discussions on internet and applying all possible solutions I have found the way that works for me.

Remember that this problem is complex and there is not one good solution for all situations. But maybe somebody will find it helpful.

    Info about hw+sw:

    iMac late 2013

    proc: 3,2GHz Intel Core i5

    RAM: 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3

    MOTU 4PRE

    El Capitan

    Pro Tools 11

    iZotope RX 4 Advanced plugin

When I was working in window iZotope RX 4 (through plugin iZotope Connect in ProTools) I had often issue with MOTU reconnecting. If that happened I had to close iZotope RX 4 and Pro Tools. Then I opened both programs and I continued till next MOTU reconnect. Meanwhile there were clicks and pops .

My solution: Open "Audio MIDI Setup". In "Audio Devices" window add two fresh new Aggregates. I have called them "Aggregate for ProTools" and "Aggregate for RX". Set up them in the same way - select in column "Use" "MOTU 4pre" first and then "Built-in Output" as second. This order is important, I am not sure why... Then set Clock Source for both aggregates as Built-in Output. Sample Rate keep the same as you are using. In my case 48000Hz.

Now use "Aggregate for ProTools" in Pro Tools and "Aggregate for RX" in iZotope RX 4 as Audio device (or Playback engine). Also set in both programs Buffer size to 256.

Everything works fine for me now. No more reconnecting MOTU and no more clicking and buzzing.

Maybe it is worthless to use two same Aggregates maybe it is enough to create only one new. But I am not expert about all this, so I am just happy it is working now .

I hope it helps somebody to be happy too

I have a similar problem with my iMAC (OS Yosemite 10.10.5) and a set of recently purchased KEF X300A's.

I do have another iMac in the house too and had put the speakers on it for about two hours and I did not have any issue arise.  When I put the speakers back on my iMac they worked for about four hours and then when the computer was idling (meaning I was not on the web or playing any music) I heard "that static sound" from the speakers.  This sound is randomly occuring for like a second or two and triggers the KEFs to shutdown.  Within 10 seconds of hearing that sound (which at this point seemed not to be caused by anything obvious) the light on the KEF's goes to bright green for a second and then changes to the blinking red.  This seems like a computer problem, but what bothers me is that when the speakers go off it takes at least 2-3 hours or more for the speakers to recover even if disconnected from the computer.

The issue that boggles my mind is that I have had this iMac for over 5 years and have never heard "that static sound" with the internal speakers, headphones or the M-Audio powered speakers, only with the KEFs does this happen. The main difference for the KEFs is that they are connected to the computer through the USB port, maybe I should use them by just connecting with the headphone output but I lose fidelity with that set up and I want them to work with the USB port.   I have endlessly searched Google for anyone having anything similar and have come up with nothing until I saw this post.

Any advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated...I'm at wit's end.

    Tom
