Previously one could double-click the border seperating the preview pane from the list of messages to hide the preview pane.
In the Mail application in Mavericks this border is no longer visible. How can I hide the preview pane in Mail on Mavericks?

If you switch to Classic View in Mail Prefs, drag the Horizontal Splitter down to the bottom of the screen then switch back to Modern View, the Preview pane will be gone from both views.
This only shrinks the preview pane, and at a certain point the preview pane can't get any smaller (I'm guessing at around 350-ish pixels) the pane doesn't shrink any more and stays there, even if I drag the arrowbar all the way to the right.
Hover over the divider line. Cursor should change to a vertical bar with arrows. Drag the divider over to the edge of the window.
Maybe you'll have to switch back to classic view. In the preferences under viewing tab.
There is no threat to leaving the preview pane open. It ain't windows.
I can drag my pane all the way to the right and hide pictures entirely. You just grab the splitter between the list and the preview pane and drag it all the way to the right.
