Mavericks: Wifi takes a while to connect after sleep

Not sure if this question has been asked, but I'm finding this rather annoying. I just upgraded from Snow Leopard and there was a feature where with one simple touch on the trackpad, you can wake your Mac up after the screen goes to sleep after a period of inactivity. I understand that this feature is no longer available after the Lion and Mountain Lion upgrades. With Mavericks, after my Macbook goes to sleep, I push a key and it wakes up, but the wifi takes a while to reconnect, however with Snow Leopard, when I woke up my macbook, the wifi didn't have to reconnect. Is anyone else having this problem? Is this a bug? I hope Apple can come up for a fix for this, because aside from the fact that I can no longer use Pro Tools 9, I'm having free "buyer's remorse" for upgrading.

I found if you go into System preferences->Network pane and at the top pane is 'Location', use that toggle bar to 'Edit Locations'. In the location pop-up press the + button and make a custom named Location and make sure you save in the pop-out and also the 'apply' in main Network pane. This will save your new Network custom named Location. Then rejoin your wireless network.

Also download the free iStumbler Beta and use it to see if your wireless router is broadcasting at the same channel as others around you. This way you change your wireless network from the others around you to stop any cross interference.

Plus if you wireless network is more than two years old consider replacing it. Most cheap retail routers these days seem to act wonky after 2 years if not outright die.

Satcomer,

I have read the fix that you describe above in several threads. I have tried it several times to no avail. My network needs to be reidentified every time I wake my Macbook Air up from sleep. I only have to re-choose my network and wait for it to connects, but doing this every time I wake it up is a pain. I don't think it is a problem with the router, since it worked right before upgrading. I'm wondering if there is a glitch in Mavericks or if there is some other way around this inconvenience. Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

I think you're right, I have this same problem. Before the upgrade my macbook connected to wifi almost instantly when I lifted the screen up, but now after the upgrade I sit there for a while and it doesn't connect, but then when it eventually does connect, it connects to the wrong network. I'm pretty sure nothing wrong with the router/internet. And it only happens when I wake it up, I restarted my laptop the other day to see if it might fix the problem.although my laptop did connect to wifi quickly after the restart, the next time I woke it up it had the same problem.

After a week of thinking "it must be me" I easily found this thread. It's definitely a Maverick cause and effect. After waking up my Powerbook I've pulled down the wifi menu and watched the wheel spin. No networks show up for nearly two minutes. I haven't had any crashes or ultimate failed connections. Just delay. But prior to Maverick, my wifi connection was instantaneous. I don't cotton to the Bluetooth idea, since I use a Bluetooth mouse.

Seems like we need Apple to step up!

I'm seeing the same problem now after doing the Mavericks EFI and other system updates and other Apps that were available. I just got my MBP 13" on Wednesday and it was working great, no problems whatsoever. Then today I had some time and decided to do all the updates. Now almost every time I close the lid to put it to sleep, when I come back and resume and want to get back on the net, it can't get to any website. My other devices are fine and surfing happily. Just my MBP has a problem now after the updates today. Geez what a pain.

I don't have the bluetooth on and still happening. The only thing to get it back surfing quickly is to toggle wifi off/on and then it's fine. Not a big issue but still annoying when it was fine since I got it before the update. Learned my lesson, if it aint broke, don't fix it!!!

I'll be doing some more diagnosing. Suspecting it may be wanting to connect to my other router which is stronger (and I've never connected it to) than my main one it normally connects to, and when I turned it off, it didn't have a problem but I have to conduct more trials of that scenario to be sure...

Nope, turning off my other router made no difference. Even after a couple of minutes of trying to get to any web page after waking/opening the lid it can't find anything online. Had to toggle wifi off/on again to get online.

Apple, please fix this annoyance. Thanks.

Another failure mode I noticed is that everything will be fine while using the MBP for an hour and then the internet will cut out all of a sudden and no websites can be reached. Again, my internet connection is fine and other devices have no problems, just the MBP. Solution is the same, toggle wifi off/on.

Thanks Apple for fixing this but please don't break anything else when you finally do get around to it.

Yes! This is happening to me too! I have to restart Mac Air in order to get back on wifi. The signal is shown on the dock to be strong, but when I open network diagnostics, it tells me it can't see the wifi network. But it is showing on the desktop icon. This is beyond annoying. I knew better than to upgrade this quickly - I did it anyway and I'm mad at myself. I like Apple to work out all the bugs first and not use me as a beta tester. I work at home on my computer all day and this is driving me crazy.
