Q: Mavericks: Wifi takes a while to connect after sleep

Not sure if this question has been asked, but I'm finding this rather annoying. I just upgraded from Snow Leopard and there was a feature where with one simple touch on the trackpad, you can wake your Mac up after the screen goes to sleep after a period of inactivity. I understand that this feature is no longer available after the Lion and Mountain Lion upgrades. With Mavericks, after my Macbook goes to sleep, I push a key and it wakes up, but the wifi takes a while to reconnect, however with Snow Leopard, when I woke up my macbook, the wifi didn't have to reconnect. Is anyone else having this problem? Is this a bug? I hope Apple can come up for a fix for this, because aside from the fact that I can no longer use Pro Tools 9, I'm having free "buyer's remorse" for upgrading.

Yes! This is happening to me too! I have to restart Mac Air in order to get back on wifi. The signal is shown on the dock to be strong, but when I open network diagnostics, it tells me it can't see the wifi network. But it is showing on the desktop icon. This is beyond annoying. I knew better than to upgrade this quickly - I did it anyway and I'm mad at myself. I like Apple to work out all the bugs first and not use me as a beta tester. I work at home on my computer all day and this is driving me crazy.

I had issues with my wifi speed dropping out when Bluetooth was on but haven't had a problem with shutting off completely.

The 'bluetooth setup assistant' in system preferences/- bluetooth/- (then hit 'Advanced' tab)

maybe cause for concern because since disabling it, my mac is again running graciously:

Just out of curiosity, It would be interesting to learn if these issue are only happening on macbooks

I won't try the Bluetooth solution, since I depend on Bluetooth. It's like if there was a problem with my car and someone said, "well if you remove the headlights she'll run great!" Hoping there's a fix coming that doesn't require crippling one part of the computer to suit another. But thanks for posting.

@tomgoosmann: My thoughts exactly. Apple dropped the ball on this one and none of the proposed solutions seem to do a thing for me. We need a fix and we need it yesterday.

Here is the probem i was having.  When opening the lid to wake the computer, the wifi would not reconnect automatically.  I had to manually choose the network from the wifi drop down menu, then it woud connect and work just fine.  After someone else here mentioned the same problem being related to bluetooth, i too noticed that if i turned off bluetooth, the problem did not happen.  The computer would reconnect when opening the lid just the way it should. I found a solution this way:

    1)  Turn off bluetooth

    2)  Delete wifi network by going to Network Preferences, then Advanced.

    3)  Reboot computer.

    4)  Connect to wifi network

    5) Turn on bluetooth.

After 3 or 4 times closing the lid, the computer would reconnect to wifi properly.  However, after re-pairing my buetooth speaker, the problem is back.  So apparently in my case, the solution worked only until I used bluetooth again.

Here was my experience, for what it's worth. My Macbook Pro with Mavericks would take up to a minute to establish a connection with my Medialink wireless N router. However, I could always connect immediately with my my previous laptop and with the same new Macbook booted into Windows. I tried messing with bluetooth and that did not help me. I replaced my router with a new Netgeat Nighthawk AC router and have not had any connection problems since.

Yet another with the same issue- MBP 2013. As soon as I turn off bluetooth wifi connects right away, Then I turn bluetooth on again right away. That's certainly faster than waiting for it to find and connect to my preferred wifi network but it's still annoying. I tried disabling all of the bluetooth setup assistant stuff like GUSTO.K suggested but that didn't help. My girlfriend doesn't seem to be havingi any such issues with her 2011 MBP  even though we're both on Mavericks.

Tried trashing all the wifi prefs, deleting and re-addint the networks and deleting the keychain entries and such but to no avail. Shutting off bluetooh is the only thing that works.

I have the same problem....upgraded and now stuck a powerbook that needs a cable connection is worthless

My powerbook is going into the basement.  Can't afford the time to debug their stuff.

At times my powerbook seems to connect to my wireless. But the connection drops and I can not get back on

I enter my security key and it comes back saying it is not correct.  I've run though the suggestions and nothing fixes it.

This is exactly the same behaviour I am seeing. Bluetooth being off all the time is not an option with the apple mouse I'm using :/

Similar:  my wifi takes a long time to reconnect after sleep.  If I manually select my router during this period, I get an error indicating that I cannot connect.  If I turn off wifi and turn it back on, the connection takes place immediately.

I haven't tried turning off bluetooth, but I often require bluetooth for keyboard, mouse, and speakers.  I find it more convenient (but still annoying) to turn wifi off and on to encourage the connection to take place.

System: Mavericks, MacBook Pro Retina mid 2012

I do not remember this being a problem pre-Mavericks.

when you hold the Alt(=option key) while clicking the Airport icon on the menubar, write down the figure of the RSSI value. post it here.

A suggestion by shafro1 in the other thread seems to have helped me:

In the power management settings, "[uncheck] put hard drives to sleep when possible and enable power nap when on battery"
