Q: Mavericks: Wifi takes a while to connect after sleep

Not sure if this question has been asked, but I'm finding this rather annoying. I just upgraded from Snow Leopard and there was a feature where with one simple touch on the trackpad, you can wake your Mac up after the screen goes to sleep after a period of inactivity. I understand that this feature is no longer available after the Lion and Mountain Lion upgrades. With Mavericks, after my Macbook goes to sleep, I push a key and it wakes up, but the wifi takes a while to reconnect, however with Snow Leopard, when I woke up my macbook, the wifi didn't have to reconnect. Is anyone else having this problem? Is this a bug? I hope Apple can come up for a fix for this, because aside from the fact that I can no longer use Pro Tools 9, I'm having free "buyer's remorse" for upgrading.

    -53.

But mine is connecting fine now with bluetooth on. I turned my air off and on several times over a period of time and something clicked.

Hello Nancy, be happy: -53 is an unusual strong signal, unless lower than say -75 you will have a good strong connection, that is not the cause of your issue as you have now proven ).

For me this problem has been solved by replacing my basic netgear router with an AirPort Extreme router.  The apple store people thought it must have been a security issue between Mavericks and the router.

No insult to you, but that is laughable on Apple's part and they should pay you for the Extreme for suggesting it. I'm sure many people who have experienced this problem, including myself, have Airport Extremes. Blaming this problem on non-Apple hardware is a weak passing the buck.

As I said, changing to the AirPort Extreme solved the probem.

    Glad it did.

Doesn't solve anyone else's problem who have AEs.

That's total crap, they're going to "fix the problem" by buying additional hardware from them after the very problem itself illustrates that they have no clue how to make a basic wifi connection work.  Mine's been off and on but long story short.. it's still not working and the router is not the problem. Though it eventually connects, turning bluetooth off and on and waiting up to 60 seconds for a connection on a known network doesn't count as "working." I don't even let it go to sleep anymore unless i have to because I don't want to have to go make some tea and wait for it to connect every time I open it

I've tried 3 routers in my own house, now i'm stuck on an ISP provided modem/router combo. It hasn't worked on any of them.

doesn't work on my parents router

doesn't work on my iphone hotspot

    doesn't work on ipad hotspot

doesn't work on Hong Kong airport wifi

doesn't work on assorted private wifi networks in China

doesn't work on Nanjing airport wifi

doesn't work on Shanghai train terminal wifi

doesn't work on Starbucks wifi anywhere in the world.

Unless Apple plans on replacing all of those with Airport extreme's I'd very much appreciate some attention to the apparent software problem within Mavericks that did not exist prior to the "upgrade"

@sewercat: We all would. This is a widely acknowledged problem and the sketchy solutions referenced on this forum do absolutely nothing for me. I too am stuck with a router/modem supplied by my ISP (AT&T Uverse), and would never be upsold on a new Apple product given my principles. Very poor form on Apple's part to even make such a suggestion.

I have the same problem. just changed my mac air to a MBP 2 months ago and now everytime i open it, it takes several seconds and sometimes i need to manualy reasign the wifi connection.

it was just fine and very fast with the mac air, and now, after spending a lot to "upgrade" to a "better" computer, it doesn't work and apple does not have a fix????

come on apple guys, please help us, I need to use BT to connect my mouse and keyboard and also want to have wifi reconnected instantaneously as it should!!!

    thanks

We should send this thread over to Gizmodo / Engadget / techcrunch

maybe when they publish it apple will wake up and fix this.

@mfractal It seems there's enough critical mass at this point to justify it. Please let the rest of us on the forum know if you do so. I'm going to head to the Apple store this weekend to see if they can do something for me and will document my experience.

well, now it's not working well at all. I have to fight with it to connect to my wifi and it continually lists all of my neighbors. It seems to prefer the wifi w/no password over my wifi. I have to run the diagnostics and somehow that triggers it and it connects by the time I finish. But what a pain!

@Whargarblicus I actually already sent this thread : https://discussions.apple.com/message/24790697?ac_cid=tw123456 to techcrunch, gizmodo, engadget and theverge..

if others will do the same maybe that'll convince them to post about it.
