Q: Mavericks: Wifi takes a while to connect after sleep

Not sure if this question has been asked, but I'm finding this rather annoying. I just upgraded from Snow Leopard and there was a feature where with one simple touch on the trackpad, you can wake your Mac up after the screen goes to sleep after a period of inactivity. I understand that this feature is no longer available after the Lion and Mountain Lion upgrades. With Mavericks, after my Macbook goes to sleep, I push a key and it wakes up, but the wifi takes a while to reconnect, however with Snow Leopard, when I woke up my macbook, the wifi didn't have to reconnect. Is anyone else having this problem? Is this a bug? I hope Apple can come up for a fix for this, because aside from the fact that I can no longer use Pro Tools 9, I'm having free "buyer's remorse" for upgrading.

Thanks for posting, however this did not fix the problem for me. My wifi is already in the first position and has been. what has worked for me is just closing any application which is connected to the internet before i put it to sleep. one thought, my settings are in automatic mode, maybe thats where the problem lies.

I made the change and it did not fix it for me either.  It is related to bluetooth, however.  With bluetooth off it reconnect rather quickly.  That's not much a fix, however.  It seems there are two temporary workarounds until Apple fixes it, disabling bluetooth and preventing sleep.  Not great options...

Its definitely bluetooth related. i agree but not sure why. i just cant see where the hang up is. im actually on an imac so resetting bluetooth takes out my keyboard and mouse and why dont i lose connection to those devices when internet connection fails? its isolated to wifi as far as i can tell.

if you didnt try this yet. go into system preferences, click network and turn wifi off and then back on. thats the quickest way to regain connection without restarting.

I've got a mid-2013 MacBook Air that had no Wi-Fi Connectivity problems until recently.  I'm on Mavericks 10.9.2.

My issues now is that whenever I start my MBA it really struggles to connect to Wi-Fi - generally I turn off & turn on Wi-Fi manually & this sorts it.  But I do have Bluetooth turned on by default as I use an external Apple Trackpad.

So following ths thread, I've turned off Bluetooth & restarted.  Miraculously Wi-Fi now connects up instantly.

A pain that Bluetooth has a bug but thahks guys, Wi-Fi connectivity much more important.

I had the exact same problem on my 2012 Macbook Air, wifi would connect with Bluetooth off but had to turn wifi off & on with bluetooth on ever since upgrading to Mavericks. I was so frustrated and I finally called Apple (who knew you get free 90 days support when you upgrade the OS).

Long story short, they told me to:

    1) Turn off bluetooth and wifi

    2) Navigate to  /MacintoshHD/Library/Preferences and delete com.apple.Bluetooth.plist

(take a backup of the file for good measure)

    3) empty trash and reboot

This fixed it for me. It's only been 1 day since the fix but it seems to be working normally now. Let me know if that helps.

Thanks for the tip, however, I have no such file.  There is com.apple.BluetoothFileExchange.plist, but not just ...Bluetooth.plist.

Also, when you did this, were you then able to have both Bluetooth and WiFi enabled at the same time?  Of did you still have to have Bluetooth off for WiFi to reconnect.

I've finally fixed it.  I too had it since my new MBP.  It seems to be related to the order in which connections are reestablished after a sleep.

    1.  Go to Network Preferences.

    2.  Click on the Cog wheel and select "Set Service Order"

    3.  Move your wifi to the top (or at least above BT)

    4.  Apply.

    This fixed it for me.

Ok, I've found and deleted com.apple.Bluetooth.plist.  It is working much better for me now.

Deleting com.apple.bluetooth.plist had worked for me, but now the problem is back.  Don't know if it reappeared when I updated to 10.9.3, or if it's because I now have a bluetooth magic mouse on most of the time.  I deleted the plist again, yet the problem remains.  And wifi is top of the service order.  No joy.
