My ipod touch failed to switch on. Reboot failed. Restore in itunes failed with unknown error (4005). it proceeds through the software extraction step but hangs on 'waiting for ipod', then gives the error message. What can I do next? Tried with security disabled and with selective startup as per apple advice.

Try reseting it again. It should work....

Check the internet and if it dosent work I would go with Toxxsicks idea
I eventually worked my way through the various possibilities in the apple information pages. Including trying with security software off, restarting the mobile support service, etc. The final suggestion was to delete all apple software in a specified order and then to reinstall. After doing this the restore completed. Relieved.
