iPod Touch 3rd Generation--Update to iOS 7?

I want to give my iPod touch 3rd generaion to my grandson. I will take it back to factory settings and remove it from my iTunes account, but will he be able to update it to iOS7? Would I be better off buying him a refurbished 4th generation? He is only 10 and will have limited funds for buying apps and music! Thank you!

iPod touch BEFORE the 5th gen model does not have enough system memory to run iOS 7. Just like "big" computers that do not have the hardware specs to run the latest versions of Windows or Mac OS (or a fancy game that needs the latest video card). An iPod touch (iPhone/iPad) is basically a small handheld computer.

I use a 1st gen iPhone (from 2007), and like the 1st gen iPod touch, it can only run up to iOS 3.1.3. And I find it very useful, for what I do with a smartphone. Old does NOT mean it has no "point" anymore...
