(Mavericks mail.app) ability to display mail messages in plaintext and to prefer plaintext by default gone

In previous version of apple mail, it was possible to show the plaintext (non-HTML) version of a message under View > Message, and there was also a preference setting, though not surfaced in any menus, that instructed mail to show all messages in plaintext by default. This could be toggled by running "defaults write com.apple.mail PreferPlainText -bool TRUE". This no longer seems to do anything, in fact the plist file that it edits appears to be empty, and the View > Message menu doesn't have a plaintext option either. Has this feature been removed entirely, or is there some way to enable it? If it has been removed entirely, does anyone have suggestions for other email clients that do support this?

Thanks!

OS X Mavericks (10.9)

It has been removed in Mavericks. You could always send Apple feedback on this.
