Mavericks Internet Sharing requiring restarts

Hey all,

I have been using Internet Sharing on my mid-2011 Macbook Air to provide internet to my iPhone and iPad (through ethernet) for the past few months. While I was running the latest incarnation of Mountain Lion, I often had difficulties with the network being available, but no internet connection being made. I often solved this problem by turning Sharing off and back on again.

Since my upgrade to Mavericks, I have experienced a different problem. I will turn on Internet Sharing and for less than half a second the sharing symbol (the grey wifi symbol with an arrow in it) will appear, before reverting to normal (normal being that the computer is searching for wifi signals). Even though Internet Sharing is 'on', neither of my iOS devices can detect the signal, and there is no indication that the macbook is even broadcasting it.

Often I will need to restart the computer 3-4 times before it works as intended.

Is there anything that I can do to minimise or eliminate this problem?

MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Don't know if it was random, but this could be the solution.

After setting up the network directly from the settings->sharing (clicking on wi-fi option, on the bottom right corner) it worked without problems.

So the procedure changes a bit (I come from snow leopard). Instead of setting up your network from the wi-fi icon, you have to go to settings->sharing

Hi Pagnamen.

Attached is the menu that I operate Internet Sharing from, as well as what my toolbar looks like when internet sharing is active. In order to turn Internet Sharing on, I go through System Preferences-->Sharing and tick the box you can see highlighted in the bottom left. I have three difficulties:

1. A problem i've had since I have started using the feature (in Mountain Lion). I will have Internet Sharing on for an extended period of time before it simply ceases to send an internet signal.

2. Another problem I have had since I started using the feature. I will begin Internet Sharing and the computer will believe it is operating normally. My iOS devices will receive the connection but will not be able to access the internet. Since Mavericks, this behaviour occasionally continues even after I cancel Internet Sharing...turning wifi off and on again seems to address this anomaly.

3. A new problem originating since my update to Mavericks. I will start Internet Sharing and the "Sharing Icon" (being the grey arrow attached) will appear for only a split-second before being replaced with the standard airport look. My computer will then be hunting for Wifi signals and give no sign that it is Internet Sharing. When this occurs, my devices do not register any wifi. The only solution is to restart my computer, often multiple times. This seems to address the issue.

I will also note that the first two issues have worsened since my update to Mavericks. This means that I can often spend an incredible amount of time simply trying to secure any form of connection that is sustainable.

Thanks again for any help you can render.

Hi.

I've never used Mountain Lion. As I said before, I jumped from Snow Leopard to Mavericks. I've never encountered problems 1 and 2.

Besides, what I had was exactly the 3 problem.

Here is how I solved it, instead of creating the network from the toolbar, as I was used to do before, here is exactly the procedure I use now (tested many times and it always work, at least for me).

1) Activate Wi-fi from the toolbar

2) Go to the Sharing options (the second window you have posted) and BEFORE clicking on the internet sharing tickbox, click on the bottom right button "Wi-Fi options" and create your network from there. I don't know if it changes something, but I always set up a 40-bit WEP key.

Also, on the list of devices on the right, I have selected only the Wi-Fi tickbox

3) Now, check the tickbox

this should at least fix your third problem (it did in my case).

If you still have the 1 and 2 problems, I don't know how to help you sorry. I can only suggest you to:

1) repair the permission of your disk on disk Utility.

2) Erase the pairing with your computer wi-fi on the device where it poses problem and re do it.

Good luck

Hi

I think I solved this!

I had to delete my original (pre-upgrade to mavericks) wifi internet sharing password in my keychain. Then reboot. Then recreate the same password again from the sharing/internet sharing/wifi options. Once I did this a stable sharing connection between all my devices resumed.

Give it a try.

Open the Keychain Access app (utilities in Apps folder or in other folder in launchpad).

IF you set a password for sharing the internet connection from that mac previously there should be a keychain save of that password. For some reason mine is called "en2" which may relate to ports as I am sharing from a mac pro with twin ethernets and sharing from wifi. The Kind of keychain item is Internet-sharing password residing on the Airport account.

Anyway, don't worry about the name just search for "internet-sharing" of fragment thereof. This will pick up the keychain item regardless of name if it exists.

I found that the prior 10.8 keychain item was present, dated 5/10 (time of last password change) and it didn't matter what I did in Mavericks this Keychain item would not modify or update, even when I changed sharing settings. After I deleted the Keychain item and rebooted I had to set up the password again in the System Pref pane/sharing/internet sharing/wifi/wifi options box. The Keychain item was recreated with yesterday's date. And we have been working better than ever since.

TBH 10.9 seems to need less enable/disable cycles on the sharing via wifi to maintain the connection, which was always an issue on earlier OSX versions.

I am having the same issue. The number three in @mikeghali's post, where the arrow shows up for a half second (if at all), and then it just tries to search for wifi. It's especially strange because for the last week, mavericks has had no trouble creating a shared network. I've tried all the troubleshoots in this thread with no success. Trying to get my ipad mini on shared network via macbook's ethernet. I didn't have a previous password before I upgraded, so there was no file to delete/ reset. I tried deleting my preferences files from in my user Library, which has worked for various wifi problems I've had before. (specifically: com.apple.internetconfig.plist and com.apple.system.preferences.plist). That didn't do anything. Restarts haven't worked so far, and neither has logging out and back in. This just inspired me to log into another user. Let me see if that will work. BRB

So, the other user has the same issue. No luck there.

Additionally, I've tried changing the wifi options --> channels, to at least 5 different channels with no success. It seems this problem is relatively common with the recent update, and it's so recent that there is not a definitive answer to this problem. I'd love some input from an Apple representative, or it to be addressed in their next software update, which will hopefully come soon!

TLDR: Upgraded to Mavericks. Ethernet sharing worked fine. A week later, SNAFU. Nothing fixes it.
