What is giving you that error message? Where are you downloading Mavericks from?

If you're downloading it from the only legit source - the App Store app found in Mac OS X 10.6.6 or later - then the only explanation is that you're using some third-party anti-virus software that is giving you a false positive. What anti-virus software is that?

Thanks for responding so quicky... I am downloading from the Apple site, and I thought of the anti-virus program but have since uninstalled it and will try again today... If this does not work, I wonder if it has to do something with the shared network I am on??? It's old and has a very high firewall to block our students from accessing inappropriate content...

    Still getting error message..

    The error message verbatim says,

"This copy of the Install OS X Mavericks application can't be verified. It may have been corrupted or tampered with during downloading."

    Any ideas??

Ahh, that's actually a fairly common message. It just means that the download has somehow been corrupted in-transit. That could be due to a problem with your hard drive (repair the hard drive with Disk Utility before trying again), could be due to a network issue (try a different network) or could just be a transient issue with Apple's servers.

    Thanks again for the reply!

I tried to repair the HD (there were some issues) but one thing could not be repaired... the message reads:

Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired.

Does this have something to do with the install error?  If not, I will take the computer home to my Wi-fi there and try again on my home network...

That is not a message given when repairing the hard drive, that is from repairing permissions. It is not at all concerning. See:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448

Did you also repair the disk itself, or only the permissions? If only the permissions, go back and repair the disk.

Thanks for the link... I won't worry about the errot message then, but I did repair my hard disk from a restore (with command-R at startup), but still no go...

Should I take it home to my home Wi-Fi and try??

how did you change networks? I'm not sure I follow that idea.

I got my stepdad a mac mini, trying to update it to Mavericks. Rather surprised it isn't already installed on it as I just ordered it last week from the apple store. At any rate,

I keep getting the dreaded "This copy of the Install OS X Mavericks.app application can't be verified. It may have been corrupted or tampered with during downloading."

#1 - They have slow internet. It is considered broadband, but realistically, only about 2 mb/s. Ugh.

#2 - I have deleted and redownloaded multiple times, no help. I tried not deleting and redownloading, no help.

#3 - I turned off wifi and made sure to use only the ethernet cable, no help

#4 - I've said ugly things about Apple and Praised windows, no help. I spoke bad about windows and Praised Mavericks, no help (just a moment of levity)

#5 - I verified the date is correct through terminal and through the preferences pain, verified time zone, etc. No help.

I have read about changing networks, but not sure how to do that or what that implies. Is that saying I force the computer to go through a different server to communicate with apples servers? My parents live in Ruidoso, New Mexico, atop a mountain so to speak. It is cable modem, but slow. The server location is about 1.5 hours away in Roswell, NM. Maybe the Aliens from outer space are corrupting this...lol.

How do I choose a different server or network?

Only thing I can think of at this point is to go back to my place in Fort Worth, download it onto a flash drive, mail it to him, and hold my breath without turning blue.

Any suggestions and enlightenment on changing networks?

    Thanks

How do I choose a different server or network?

You would have to take the machine to a different location and connect to a different network. That's a little more difficult when you use an iMac or Mac Mini, but still possible.

Downloading the installer onto a flash drive could work, but I think you'd have to download using the same Apple ID that your stepdad will be using. I believe the installer is linked to the Apple ID used to download it.

I'll be heading home today. I'll try downloading Mavericks to a flash drive. If I understand right, I need to sign on with his ID, make the download to the flash drive, then send it to him.

Would he need to first drag it over to his computer or simply boot it from the flash drive?

I'm curious about something, why does the apple website show mavericks as part of the new mac mini yet they send me out an older machine loaded with older software? Doesn't seem like something they would normally do. Or is this par for the course?

About this mac shows it is a late 2012 mac mini, we're about to enter 2014. Is this the newest one? Could that be a problem between software and hardware?

    Searching for any answers.

    Thanks for your help,

    Robert
