Mavericks problems with Safari 7

When I go to a website and click on a topic, Safari would always open on a new page with the original page left open. Now after viewing the new page, I can't go back to the main page! The back button doesn't work either, so I have to quit the page altogether. Apple... what on earth are you doing causing your loyal users so much frustration with Mavericks!

No problems with Safari on v10.9 here ...

Might be an extension or plugin that's not compatible with Mavericks ..

From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.

If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.

Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect: Allow all other plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.

Thank you, Carolyn. Went through the above procedures but unfortunately no joy. Safari 7 still not doing what it should. Would love it to work as well as Snow Leopard did. It did everything beautifully for me! Certainly regret making the 'upgrade' to Mavericks. Maybe the old saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies here. :-)) Have used Apple exclusively and enthusiasticly since the early 90's but have never had problems of this magnitude.

I don't believe I have any 3rd party plug ins that could be causing the problem. I have checked the troubleshooting page.

One other thing. Press the Widget button and the page now appears with a solid grey screen making it impossible to use the calculater with a desktop document. How do I get it to superimpose on the desktop as before? Probably a preference somewhere but couldn't locate it with a quick check.

Your help is appreciated.

Thanks Ravindra. Should have mentioned I have already reset PRAM and repaired permissions. The back button does work on some but not all all websites. For example, http://www.rense.com I would be interested to know if other Safari 7 users can access this site, go to a story, and then back to the main page using the back button (or arrow). I can't. Rense claims to be in the top 1% of all website visits, so it is not an obscure site.

Also, a bump for the grey screen background on the widgets. How do I get them to come on screen as a supered image, the same as my previous Safari?

Hi Andy. Appreciate your advice. However, on my spare 24" iMac I an running Safari 5.1.10. On this system, you click on any story on Rense and it opens as a new page leaving the site intact. You can then hit close and the main page is still open for futher browsing. Not so in Mavericks Safari 7!

So this is the problem... when you have read a particular article you are forced to close that story and leave the site when there are still hundreds of stories to view. You have to re-open the site every time. It's not the way it should work and not the way Snow Leopard's Safari worked.

I need to know how to keep the page open when you go to a link, the same as Safari 5.1.10 in Snow Leopard. Thanks.

>>...please tell me if, when I visit a site and click on a link, the original page can remain open the way it does in Snow Leopard's Safari 5.1.10...

With most sites, what you want isn't normal - if you visit say Apple.com & click any link, the page will change. not stay open. If your Safari 5.1.10 opens a new window or tab instead, there's likely an add-on or Safari extension there which is responsible.

For example - http://canisbos.com/linkthing can be setup to do that.

Andy... with all due respect, that's not correct. What I want IS normal!

Lets take another news source like Mail Online, http://www.dailymail.co.uk/

I go there, click on a news story, read the story in a new window and the back button takes me back to the main page. IT WORKS! That is the way most world news sites operate.

Point I'm trying to make is that Safari 7 won't do that on sites like Rense and others I have tried. It seems to work on some but not on others. And Snow Leopoard's Safari works fine on ALL stites.

A good example : it is not normal for most links at dailymail.co.uk to open in a new tab/window. I tested without any add-ons in a fresh Guest account, on both Firefox & Safari... click a story, opens in the same window/tab. Point I already made, is that if your Safari 5 does different, something's causing that - either a site setting/cookie (check as a guest user w/o sugning in) or an add-on/extension/plug-in.
