Nov 11, 2013 8:41 AM in response to martinschroeterby CatWings,I got a macbook pro which had same issue, and after I reset SMC the SD reader still not works. But something strange happend. First I fully insert my SD card, nothing appering on my mac, then I slightly pull out the SD card just a tiny little bit(remember just a little bit) until I got notification on screen says I didnt reject the disk correctly(or safely) and the SD card appeared. it is really weird

Nov 12, 2013 11:36 AM in response to CatWingsby Vellmar,SMC reset did not work for me. Neither is it a contact problem. Mavericks seems to have rendered my 2012 MacBook Air's card reader useless.
I've reported it as a bug to Apple, and encourage all others with this problem to do the same.

Nov 24, 2013 4:28 PM in response to Vellmarby Vellmar,After trying everything else, I decided it was time for a clean install of Mavericks. Reformatted the drive, installed the OS, and tested the card reader -- it worked just fine.
So, something in Mavericks was conflicting with some older file I had on my system. A clean install solved my problem, but it's not for the faint of heart. On the other hand, I do have a nice, lean, clean system now.

Nov 28, 2013 1:37 AM in response to martinschroeterby MacTjerk,Same here with iMac late 2009.
SD card is not recognized, only rebooting with SD card in the slot brings it up.
Not a pretty workflow for a professional filmer like me.

Dec 7, 2013 2:28 AM in response to CatWingsby MacTjerk,The SMC reset as described works only once.
Putting the card in will mount it automatically (so no hardware failure)
After unmouting, and taking out, putting it bacj in will do nothing.
Back to square one

Feb 19, 2014 8:39 AM in response to martinschroeterby Kanad,Hello, encountereing the same problem in my imac mid 2011 21 inch. I've even tried making a new user and trying from threre, but its the same. Only thing thats remaining is the clean install option. But thats time consuming and since I'm a bit busy, I cant do it immediately. I'll post its result when I do it.
Meanwhile here is the feedback i left to Apple.
Hi,
Ever since updating to Mavericks, I can no longer format cards in the sd card slot. I've tried sd, micro sd with adapters, and capacities of 4, 8 and 16 Gb. In most cards i can read the contents, e.g. photos etc. In some (4 Gb one) I can even delete stuff and make folders - i.e modify contents, but in all the cases i'm unable to format. I've tried the following methods-
1.Disk Utility
2.Terminal
3.Apps
In all the cases I've failed.
I've even tested the cards in other devices (including Raspberry PI, Digital Camera, Mobile phones and 2 windows laptops- a sony and dell). They work fine there.
I've also cleaned the slot by blowing air, tried various methods like slightly removing card, inserting with a little pressure, restarted with the cards inside but its the same.
