Since installing OS X Mavericks on my Mid-2010 Macbook Pro, occasionally there is distortion on the display- lots of coloured lines

Since installing OS X Mavericks on my Mid-2010 Macbook Pro, occasionally there is distortion on the display- lots of coloured lines but not covering everything, just in places of text, icons, sometimes one side of a desktop background, etc.

I have found a temporary solution:

- Go over any icons in the dock with the mouse, click on any folders in the dock, make every place where this distortion has occurred appear on the screen (almost, as if making it known?)

- change my display resolution and then change it back.

This does the trick and takes away the distortion, but after a while, they start again. So it isn't a problem with my actual screen, but it must be something to do with the OS, because this has only started ever since I upgraded to OS X Mavericks.

Any suggestions on what I should do? My Macbook Pro is in very good condition, and has never had any problems like this before.

Has anybody else had this problem?

Thank you for your help

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

I think is a different issue since the video is not lost, and it has to be something related with Mavericks since the problem was not present on mountain lion, and start immediately after the first run on Mavericks.

Very few saw the problem on Snow Leopard. It wasn't until the Mountain Lion upgrade did it become apparent. Snow Leopard did not drive the video card as hard as Mountain Lion. If Mavericks is driving the card even harder, then it is possible.

If you don't have a nearby Apple Store or Apple Service Center, then I guess hope is all you have. It's a known defect. That description may be the only artifacts they were aware of at the time of the article.

If you do manage to get to a place that can check it, make sure they run the test that is specifically for that issue. If they run the normal checks, it won't find anything wrong. Take a printout of the article with you.

The offer was only good for three years from purchase, but given that it doesn't seem to appear until you upgrade to a more demanding OS, you might be able to convince them to fix it for free if you are already beyond three years. You'd likely have more luck at an actual Apple Store as opposed to a Certified Service Center.

Having the exact same problem on my MacPro 2008 with nvidia graphics - this is definitely a Mavericks issue ! Never had it before updating - now it crops up daily - disappears as soon as I go to the "color " tab and re-select my profile. Got two screen setup and this ONLY occurs on my Eizo CG245 which is hooked up using DVI - on my second monitor - and HP LP2475 - which is hooked up using displayport it never occurs -
