Q: Uninstall Offers4U

I just upgraded to Mavericks.

There is an annoying shopping/pricing "tool" being overlayed on most Safari pages. How do I remove it, kill it, hunt down the code writer... anything... help!

It does give you the opportunity to go to the "offers4U" website, download an uninstaller, and use that tool. Unfortunately, that uninstaller is a .exe file and useless to me... us.

Thanks!

Whit

    Think the culprit was flip4mac.

Why? Flip4mac is a legit plug-in, and nowhere in my Adware Removal Guide do I recommend removing it! It should not be causing this kind of problem.

its not the plugin i am guessing but the other crap that the cnet installer installed is activated by it.  the new installer is kinda shady.  i just redownloaded flip4mac and there were all sorts of options to install 3rd party software.  you can opt out but i maybe i missed it when i downloaded.

i possibly could be wrong about this but so far, no pop ups.  let see if it comes back

Ahh, yes, if you downloaded it from Download.com, it's probably wrapped in an adware installer. Flip4mac itself isn't bad, but CNET is giving you a tainted copy. You should never download from Download.com or Softonic, both of which are known to inject adware into some of their downloads.

Using Firefox go to the tools menu and select add ons then go to extensions, in the list you will see the slick savings pop up menu blocker as well as other annoying things that pop up...you can then select disable or delete

    Hope this is helpful

Thanks, hacchuum! I only noticed the pesky Offers4U malware last night and already it was annoying me so much I HAD to get rid of it. I searched online but some of the suggestions were plain rubbish or assumed prior knowledge of technical jargon. So glad I found your instructions. I simply went to Safari - Preferences - Extensions, and there is was, plain as day. UNINSTALLED! Gone! Thank you!!!

Here is the page source for the adware in Safari 7.0.6 (I opened it in a 'new tab')

Hoping that this will help get to the root of this unwanted sh1t ... but I cannot see where it is launching from. Anyone with coding skills able to see anything here?

    Thanks in advance.

I also got annoying overlaying ads, but in Google Chrome. It was an extension called Translate Selection that caused all this. And I have no memory of installing it myself.

AAARGH!!!! A few hours ago I started getting 2 popups on every page I went to in CHrome, found this thread, but there is no such Extension when I look in my Chrome extensions - only two there - FB Purity & A Roku extension.  Also, didn't see anything like it in the Activity Monitor.

But the offers4u keeps on coming!

    What happened?

How do I rid myself of it? That makes the MAc almost unusable!

I am sorry to hear, but sadly I think I can't help you. I have no idea how I got my computer infected. I don't want to brag, but I have very good knowledge about my little computer thingy, but I still cannot figure out how the extension got installed.

One advice I can give is that the male-ware extension that I had was actually a bit polite. In a very small font below the commercial rubbish there was a text displaying the name of the source for this inconvenience.

I had the same problem but with Safari - my IS guy at work recommended downloading BitDefender and BitDefender Adware removal tool for free from the appstore.  Ran it this morning and voila problem solved.  Good luck, hope this works for you

Thank you for sharing! I was having the issue on Chrome but using BitDefender worked. After moving the detected files to the trash I had to go to finder and "secure empty trash" because the files wouldn't delete normally as it said they were in use. But everything seems to be functioning normally now! No more annoying pop-ups or tabs opening out of nowhere.
