iMac late 2009 & Apple TV

Hello,

I would be grateful for advice:

I have a late 2009 27ins iMac running Mountain Lion. I do not watch television and have no tv set. I use BBC iplayer and Get iPlayer automator to watch programmes on the Mac after they have been broadcast.

I would like to watch these in another room - away from my desk so:

If I buy a television set and Apple TV will I then be able to watch these programmes using wifi? I am aware that the late 2009 iMac may not support airplay but believe there are other methods I can use.

If anyone could advise me that this is the correct way to achieve my ends - or offer suggestions - I would be grateful

(not sure whether this is relevant but I do not, and do not wish to, use iCloud)

Apple TV connects to a Wifi Network that you have created by using a WiFi router such as Airport Extreme or Airport Express. You technically do not need your iMac to use Apple TV and your HD TV, providing you have set up a WiFi network.

You can steam iTunes and iPhoto content from your iMac to Apple TV via Home Sharing.

Thanks for the reply. Just a bit confused - you say I don't need iMac to use Apple TV but in the scenario I gave which is to access iplayer and getIplayer automator programmes stored on the Mac surely I do?

Sorry for the confusion. My mistake, yes you would need Airplay to access those Apps. I know my mid 2009 iMac does not support Airplay.

If you have an iPad or iPhone and if those apps are available for IOS, you could use Airplay from those devices to Apple TV.

Thanks. I have an iPad but it is the original no.1 so think it might have similar problems.

Anyway - in principle I can access the programmes I want stored on the iMac via wifi if I buy a television set and an Apple TV? And use another programme rather than airplay?
