"Tiger" vs "Leopard" that is the question...

Currently I'm using a OS X (10.3.9) "Panther" on my 733 Mhz Power PC G4 "QuickSilver" with 1.5 GB of SDRAM and of late I've been thinking of jumping to "Tiger" - better later than never! It's used for both home and my small business.

But with "Leopard" just around the block and coming on strong wouldn't it better to hold off and then for go for "Leopard"?

Not necessarily. If you're happy with Panther and you haven't made the switch to Tiger, unless there's some compelling features that you must have in Leopard, there'd be no good reason to switch.

Aside from that, Leopard will not ship until sometime next year, probably after the first quarter, so that's 9 months away. Until they do release it, we won't have a complete feature list, or even minimum hardware requirements.

Just because something is new, doesn't mean you need it.

Panther ran better on my G4 tower than Tiger. Don't sell out for a widget. I could not tell any differences in features in my everyday work. If any thing ever happens to my G4 that requires me to reinstall the OS I will reload Panther. If there are cool features in Leopard that you would use and you are well above the minimum requirement then go for Leopard.

Hello Paul.

Panther ran better on my G4 tower than Tiger

This can certainly be true depending on the Mac but there is much more to Tiger over Panther than Widgets.

And telling any differences in features in one's everyday work is relative depending on the work as I'm sure you know.

I have ten zillion widgets all over the place. The DashOnOff preference pane is great for when I need all my horsepower. Turn off all the dashboard processes, and when you need them again, turn them on with a couple clicks. The Widgets stay where they were in your dashboard. Easy, like the mac! Let us know if your Tiger system runs better without the Widgets turned on.

OK

Here's a thanks for everyone who replied to my question!

To update everyone I am now the proud owner of a copy of OS X (10.4) "Tiger" albeit I have yet to load it because of some pressing family issues.

So stay tune for more questions as I move forware into Tiger!

Before you install it, backup your current Panther installation to a bootable FireWire HD.That will allow you to restore it in case Tiger doesn't meet your expectations. I also suggest updating to 10.3.9 and when you update, select the update previous version option. It's the least intrusive method. See http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html and http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/archiveinstall.html for other tips.
