Indeed- sounds like Mavericks was not kind to you. That stuff happens, as we have all suffered. I haven't had any significant problems yet on my MBP. A little flakiness with the trackpad. But yesterday I gave it power workout and it seems OK. Nothing else to report. That disk is running a system that started in Leopard and has gone through several migrations and upgrades.

Until upgrading becomes compelling, my Mac Mini is still running ML. I did upgrade and then restored back, but Mavericks seemed to be OK. One thing is that if you upgrade a Mac Mini, your monitor calibration will be thrown way off and you'll be greeted by a ghostly, washed out screen. More than you'd think, calibrating third party monitor's to Macs can be a real pain.

i don't know if you run them, and many people poo poo on them as unnecessary, but there are ten or so maintenance scripts out there that you can find online or on these boards, and I swear by them (but maybe it's just a placebo). I like to run them every month or so (or when the system seems flakey) from Terminal. I've hear that Repair Prebindings is no longer necessary for example, but I still do it. Can't hurt anyway.

I'd be curious to know which programs were incompatible for you- I only had two, and I'm really happy neither was PS or AI. Also, you probably know there are uninstallers you can download that will delete the related plist folders, etc., along with the app folder. If I lost apps that I paid substantial money for, I'd be reluctant to upgrade. I did lose 13 bucks on one...

I've been fortunate- I haven't had any major problems since OS X came out, though I've had headaches and many spinning beachballs of course. The worst thing that happened to me was the 2009 (?) iMac with the bad power board. Yep, the machine died just a week after warranty. Right after I got divorced too come to think of it. Maybe it was a bad omen.

Here's a solution that worked for me:

Start up in Safe Mode (shut down or force shut down by holding down the power key for 8 seconds) then hold down the Shift key when you Restart.

Launch Disk Utility and Repair Permissions (I had to do this three times until there were no repairs made)

When I restarted normally my cursor was fine.

YMMV

Good luck.

I had the same trackpad problems when I upgrade to Mavericks on my MacBook Pro. Apple thought there was a problem with the trackpad. The Genius did all sorts of tests and finally decided it was a software problem.

I made a copy of the user Preferences folder and then deleted all my preferences. I restarted, let the system regenerate preferences, and then dragged back all my preferences. I didn't replace any Preferences the system recreated.

This solved my problem.

Here is a video recording of the trackpad issue I am having with my MBP. In the video I am merely touching the trackpad without moving it. When I say 'trackpad' I mean the integrated trackpad in my Mid 2010 MBP 15" i5 (There seems to be some confusion regarding this, some speaking of an external bluetoothh trackpad, others integrated).

I have thus far tried every fix mentioned, all to no avail. The issue seems to start and stop intermittently and for no reason at all, addionally it doesn't appear to be related or triggered by any App, but the OS only. My problems began immediately after upgrading to Mavericks, of that I am sure.

Very frustrating, and all the more because Apple hasn't bothered to address the problem in any of their updates.

I guess that is the way to correct the problem.

But, for me there's no need to restart the computer.

I guess the problem is with "O zoom acompanha o foco da digitação" my OSX is portuguese.

Maybe in english is "The zoom follow the focus of type", I don't know right now.

For me turn of this feature seem to trackpad gone back to normal state.

Thanks for the link!

I can confirm, my trackpad problem is gone after turn off the option "The zoom follow the focus of type", I really don't know the correct spelling.

But I have to restart the computer to everything get back to working.

I only can do the fix after the tip of @Ganesht48 to access the url: http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=17764897&postcount=16

For me only need to turn off that option and I'm happy now!

I'm having the exact same problem on my macbook pro. Cursor will move but cannot click anything. Cannot drag and drop. Pretty much useless. having to use a mouse. Feel duped. Nothing is better with teh upgrade and now things are much worse with the trackpad. Getting to be about like a PC at this rate. Since Jobs died the place is lost.

I have this problem and I am not convinced the suggestions folk have made here are a fix. Why? Because when I reboot the problem goes away for a while. Might be a few days, might just be a few hours. But eventually my Magic Trackpad will freeze. When it does, just going into preferences, trackpad, and clicking on bluetooth button will bring it back. However any 3 finger gesture will cause it to freeze again. I use 3 finger drag. Cure is to reboot, but then it will come back again and again. I've tried two different trackpads. Same issue. Only with Mavericks. Very very frustrating as the trackpad has become such a part of my Mac experience now that I'd hate to go back to a mouse.

To all recent posters on this forum, the only sure fire way to deal with problem is rebuild your machine.

The simple fact is - it was a major upgrade and old prefs are conflicting. A simple time machine rebuild won't get rid of it if you copying over old system files.

I wasted hours / days doing everything I could find - even with apple's help. But once rebuilt machine never had another issue. They confirmed that ALL major upgrades should be clean installs.

Simple hard truth.
