Please, safe yourself and don't post this kind of comments. Works for me, works for other people. If you have a problem be patient and wait for respond from somebody.
OS X will not install on Macintosh HD drive as there is a problem with partition or system on this partition. Read this artile and follow instrucitons from it: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417.
And small advise - before you do anything create yourself a backup of your data. Just in case and before is to late.
Sorry, i'm just really angry that it isn't installing. I got this message after I had 2 other problems. Also the article doesn't help me.
This is one reason Mavericks may not install: OS X: Cannot install on a volume used by Time Machine for backups
I'd like to add my voice to those who cannot get Mavericks to work. I have a 20" early 2008 iMac with 4GB RAM and 60 GB free space on my Macintosh HD. The download from the Apple Store went well and I have an "Install OS X Mavericks" file (5.31 GB) in my Applications folder. Mavericks seemed to install but, when it finished, the Desktop was grey with no icon and none of my programs would run. The install was over a functioning OS 10.8.5 and Macintosh HD passed verification with Disk Utility and I repaired permissions before the install. Fortunately, I cloned my Macintosh HD with SuperDuper prior to installing Mavericks so no data was lost. I did the installation twice with the same result each time then I gave up and reverted back to OS 10.8.5. What is going on? Mavericks needs some serious repairs. I've never has an OS upgrade do this.
Please start a new Discussion because your concern is very different than mia-sehana's, and more information is required to solve it.
mia - have you verified both the disk volume and the "Macintosh HD" partition?
I also have the same problem as mia. I have varified the disk "Macinstosh HD" and made sure that I had no time machine back ups but it still doesn't work.

Perhaps if you told us what those 2 other problems were it might shed light on a solution.
Mia- you should try to install OS X Mavericks onto an external hard disk and boot up the external drive. From there you should be able to upgrade to the disk you want. (it worked for me)

Hi Fred,
You may want to consider to clean install OS X Mavericks. You can transfer your applications, documents, and settings later with Migration Assistant.
Thank you for the reply. I was planning to try that next. I have a blank HD I recovered from a dead MacBook. I'll reformat it and try to install Mavericks on it.

Greetings,
Alittle late to the party but this might help someone else. I had this same error and it turned out to be Journaling was turned off. Turn it on, reboot, and you should be good to go (at least in my case).
