My iMac does not start up after Mavericks upgrade

Hi,

I have a 2010 27" iMac with OSX.6.8 (if I remember well). Yesterday, I made a backup on an external drive with Time Machine, I downloaded Mavericks, proceeded to installation and when it restarted it got stuck on the grey screen.

I've tried every procedure from the Apple support, nothing worked.

Please help. I'm not living close to an Apple store and I'd love to figure this out by myself.

Hi Philippe,

Has this iMac gone without AC power for extented periods?

If so likely the PRAM Battery is dead.

Couple of things to try...

Hold alt key at bootup, what boot options show up?

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.

Power off your imac hold down on command and R key while holding them down start your system keeping the keys command and R held down the disk utility screen should open when you see it release the keys and select reinstall OS it will have you long in to your apple account follow the prompts from there ( it took about 2-3 Min. for the disk utility to open on my imac ) hope this helps..

I have, sort of, solved the problem. It seems that Mavericks was clashing with one of my programs, possibly Flip4Mac. As I have an alternate system set up I was able to save all the contents of my main disc, then delete everything. using disc utilities. After Maverick was installed a menu came up asking what I wanted to restore. The first time I chose everything, and finished up with the same grey screen. So I tried a second time and chose not to restore the applications, and finally after spending so much time I have a fully functioning Mavericks. Now all I have to do is very carefully restore the rest of my applications.

Thank you guys!

I brought my iMac to the local dealer where I had Bought it. After one week they told me the mother board was damaged (by an update??). The repair was half the price of the new iMac. So I bought a new one... When I picked up the old one, I realized they had succeded to start it up, but they were unable to explain how... So I have two Macs and I spent over $2000 for nothing.

Okay, we're in Tahiti, but I wish we had a decent Mac support over here...
