using iphoto to import hd into imovie 9

Am I crazy...but after working for about 2 hours through Wifi I can't get to work for my new Canon G30 camcorder for my older MacBook Pro 17-inch, I used Iphoto to import HD video into IMovie 9 without a problem. Using the USB cable I just clicked on import in Iphoto and then into Imovie. It seems too easy, so my question after not finding much out there on the Internet, is this right? In all my searches all I find are converter products, which don't even work on MP4, which is what I like to record in...let me know if I'm off here. Thanks.
