Q: The  “Always open folders in a new window” is missing in the Finder preferences General pane.  How can I make this a default again for opening folders in their own window?

I am re-editing my book for publication and badly need my folders to open in their own windows, in order to drag and drop .jpegs into the manuscript.  The “Always open folders in a new window” option in the Finder's General preference pane has disappeared in Mavericks.  I used to be able to just double- click the folder in question and it would open in its own window (in Mountain Lion), and I REALLY need to be able to do this ASAP!  I tried the new Tabs system and I can't get it to work like separate windows do, where I can resize them and move them all over my desktop.

Does anyone have an idea on how to get this former Finder feature back?

I can't find it either.  That was always my preferred setting.  If you press the Command key when you double click on a folder it will open in a new window.

This is currently the only way to get Finder windows to open in a new window. Unfortunatly there is no way to set it by default to behave like it used to in 10.8

Please leave Apple feedback to get them to restore this as a choice to be default. http://www.apple.com/feedback/

Thanks, docfi!  I tried it and it works!  At least, even with an extra step, I can open folders in windows.  I have sent feedback to Apple on this problem, and I'm hoping that an update will come out to restore our favorite setting in Finder!

    Hi, docfi,

After days of research, I have discovered a free app that restores everything that Mavericks removed from Finder!  It's called Better Touch Tool, and now, I can swipe left for Previous, right for Next, and tap once in the middle of my Magic Mouse for Cmd-dbl click!!!  This app works with ALL input devices for Mac - and also PC mice - and, did I mention, it's FREE???

All our Finder problems are solved!

That's not true. It cannot force Finder to have "always open folder in new window" as default behaviour. At least I cannot figure out how. Any hint?

You're right, it can't create a default "always open folder in new window," BUT, with a single tap on my Magic Mouse, any folder opens IMMEDIATELY in a new window!  Here's how:

Open Better Touch Tool.  On the bottom "Magic Mouse Gesture:" , choose from the drop down list - I chose "Single Finger Tap Left."  Then, under "Predefined Action:"  choose "CMD-Doubleclick."

This obviates using keyboard and mouse together, so now you can open any folder in a new window with only one tap on the top left of the Magic Mouse (where you would usually left click).

On my MacBook Air track pad, under "Touchpad Gesture", I chose "Corner Click Bottom Left," and under "Predefined Action", I chose "CMD-Doubleclick.

I hope this helps. It sure helped me get my old Finder back - for the most part!

There is no "Touchpad Gesture" under Settings/Trackpad. I am using new RMBP.

If I only want to open a folder in a new window all I need is to double click with cmd button. It's a part of 10.9. I do not understand why I should to use that application. It does no solve anything. What we really want is to have the "default open a folder  in a new window" feature. It is  frucked up by Apple and apparantely it cannot be solved by that or any other tool so far.

Apple has broke Finder in Maverics in much more places. E.g. when I am in opened window and I want to open another my Home directory (or /Appliciations) folder using keyboard (cmd+shift-h/cmd+shift-a) I cannot. It will open new content in my current folder. Which is stupic and useless. I cannot simply move an object from my current folder to that new one like before. I have to open another, any window, first because cmd+shift-h cannot be opened in a new window.

I also found that alt/option key does not work like before. If I want to go back toone of my parents wintow AND CLOSE my current window behing, I could kell cmd+alt before. Not it just does not work. Finder leaves the same mess behind like Windoze does. (that's one of reasons nobody is opening folder in new windows there, it just does not work well) And it does not work well in OS X 10.9 as well. It is too close to stupid Windows behaviour than ever before.

BTW, TotalFinder and TotalSpace2  can restore some missing parts of the Finder...

    Hi,

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

---> To Always open folders in a new window in Maverick,

simply go to System Preferences > KeyBoard > Tab KeyBoard

and create a New ShortCut for the Finder Application,

the Menu Title will be «Open in New Window»,

and assign a shortcut such as ctrl O!!!

---> cmd down should work (I didn't test it)

but I don't like to conflict with built in shortcut on my Mac

and that is why I always use ctrl.

---> It will work only if the Side Bar is Open

and even if your are in Column View

(which is the easiest View Type to navigate)

and restore your opened window state such as

Side Bar Hidden + View as Icon or View as List!!!

---> In the case that the Side Bar is hidden the cmd down

do it well in Icon View and in List View but not in column view!!!

---> I hope that THIS will help!!!

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

    Sincerely yours, Joel.

As others have said.....first, go to Finder > Preferences and make sure the checkbox is deselected for "open folders in tabs instead of new windows".

If you're like me and don't like tabs very much, there is a way to make folders always open in windows with a simple double-click. (I'm using Mavericks 10.9.5).  Go to any folder on the Desktop, open it, and select View > Hide Toolbar. After that, all folders within that folder will open in a new window. I tried this with the Macintosh HD Folder (which I put on my Desktop) and all folders within it (no matter how deeply buried) open in new windows with only a double-click.

Of course, you will lose the sidebar and the toolbar, so it's not a perfect solution, but at least you'll be done with tabs.  Maybe get on Apple's case via /feedback to bring it all back.

    That's a fantastic solution!!

Just did that on my home folder and all is well.

However, this resets once you have closed all the windows
