Macbook pro mid-2012 vs Retina Late 2013

I originally purchased the i7 macbook pro mid-2012 with a 750gb hdd and 8gb ram from best buy, but once the haswell macbook pros were announced I returned it in favor of the macbook pro with the i5 ivy bridge and 500gb hdd and 4gb ram. I figured for the price I paid for the i7 ($1300) wasn't worth it. The late 2013 model with 256gb ssd and 8gb ram would cost me $1400 and the i5 non retina model costs $1000. I've narrowed it down to either paying close to what I originally paid with the new retina macbook or going with the cheaper non retina model and upgrade to an ssd and add ram later if needed. The screen would be nice but it isn't necessary as is the extra 2 hours of battery life. Is there any reason somebody could give me that it would make a lot more sense to spend an extra $400 on the new computers? Also, I would like to stick to best buy so I will not be able to customize. Thank you.

Hi matt

You bought the high end MBP & then returned it for the low end model.

Well if you are into graphic intensive tasks or iOS development then the new retina model would be great, however if you just use it for general purpose like mail, internet music & movies then no point spending extra $400. So you need to choose accordingly.

By the way since you mentioned best buy, they are offering the new 2013 base model as a black friday deal. So do check it out.

New retina models have great specs but are not meant for everyone. You should understand clealy before going for one. If you know how to make full use of the fastest SSD in the market, retina display, 8 GB RAM then 2013 retina will be a great deal. 🙂
