Q: stylus xz-10

Hi everyone!

Does anyone have the same problem  as I have? When I import RAW files from my Olympus Stylus XZ-10 Aperture gives me an error message "Unsupported Image Format". However on Apples compatability site (http://www.apple.com/de/aperture/specs/raw.html) it says that this camera is supported.

I'm running Aperture 3.5 on Mavericks and Camera RAW 4.09.

Thanks a lot for any comments on this problem!

Are that only new images that are giving this error? Are your older images in the library o.k.?

Sometimes you will get this error message, if the images on the card are corrupted. Can PhotoShop open the files?

Also, occasionally the raw processing needs to be started manually - have you tried to use "Hotos > Reprocess original"?

    Hey Léonie

Thanks a lot for your reply!

I have this problem with all images from this camera... old and new... With Photoshop I have no problem opening them.

Unfortunately reprocessing the originals didn't help either.

Have you got any other ideas? :-)

In similar cases it helped previously to register the  "Core types bundle" with the OS again. Only I have no idea, if it will work with the new OS as well. I tried the lsregister command on my Mavericks system and it seems to be harmless.

    Try the following:

    • Launch the Terminal window from the Applications > Utilities folder.

Copy and Paste the following sequence of commands into the window:  The commands do the following - change the directory to the directory where the "lsregister" command is installed and run it on the CoreTypes bundle, that contains all known file types.

After you paste each line enter the "return" key to execute it before entering the next line.

    cd /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions

    cd A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/

    lsregister -R /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Library

Then restart the system and try again.

    Regards

    Léonie

Added: The last command is split by the forum software across two lines: Everything from "lsregister -R /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Library" goes onto one line

    Hi again!

No joy unfortunately. I did excactly as you told me to, but it didn't solve my problem even though it sounded like a good solution.

If you have another brainwave I'm all ears ;-)

Manu, try, if the problem is related to your Aperture library or your account.

    • Create a new test library, by launching Aerture with the options key held down. Import a few photos. Does that work?
    • Sign into a different user account, for example the "Guest" account. Launch Aperture there and import a few photos. DOes it work in the Guest account?

    • If it works on a new Aperture library, try the Aperture Library First Aid Tools.
    • If it only works in a different user account, post back.  Then you will need to remove üreferences or presets from your User Library.
    • If it does not work in any account, reinstall Aperture.

While searching for other occurrencies of this problem I came accross this post, that discusses permission problems and gives a couple of solutions.

However since I did a clean install on my MBP and my iMac and tried opening my files on both machines (iMac from internal HDD and MBP from external HDD after making a new library from my Aperture project) I don't reckon there's a problem with the library or the permissions.

It seems that this camera type just isn't supported. My other Camera's RAW files work without a fuss...

I wonder if it has anything to to with the 4.09 Version of Camera RAW... Because I'm almost sure that I could open the Olympus RAW files after updating to Aperture 3.5 but before Updating to Camera RAW 4.09... Though I'm not a 100% sure...

The Aperture raw support page lists the camera as supported since  Aperture 3.4, see:

    http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html , footnote *** Requires Aperture 3.4 or later.

The Mt. Lion page http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5371    does not mention any support at all for your camera.

It looks like the raw support for your camera has gone missing.

    Send a bug-report to Apple:  http://www.apple.com/feedback/aperture.html

It does seem like that indeed. I now filed a bug-report...

Thanks anyway for your ideas :-)

    You can use ExifTool.

Open Terminal in the Directory where your ORF Raw format files are and type:

    exiftool -CameraType2='XZ-1' *.ORF

    That's it.

Exiftool will create a copy for each modified file.
