iPhoto Library Upgrader

I have just bought a new iMac with Mavericks and have used the Migration Assistant to move everything from my old Macbook (running Leopard 10.5). I have updated to iPhoto 11.

Each time I try and open iPhoto it says 'To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared. To prepare the library, use the iPhoto Library Upgrader available from Apple.' I have downloaded and installed the iPhoto Library Updater several times but still keep getting the same message when I try to open iPhoto.

Please could anyone help me?

Thanks.

Download iPhoto Library Managerand use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)

This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Thank you this has 99% solved the issue for me.

Now I just have the problem that when I open the rebuilt file I get the offer to import 2 photos.

If I select yes.... I get asked the question again next time....

I answer no... it says it will put the 2 photos in a file.

This creates 3 problems....

a) it is irritating every time I open iPhoto

b) it does NOT put the photos wehere it says it will and

c) everytime it creates a new extra folder.. (which is empty).

The rebuild option did not fully finish.... do you think it will help if I rebuild the folder 1 more time?

Terance Devlin thank you so much for this advice.... We've been waiting to view all our daughters wedding photos which were locked inside iPhoto.

Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.

Look there for a Folder called 'Import' or 'Importing'.

Drag it to the Desktop. Make no other changes. Start iPhoto. Does that help?

If it does then look inside that folder on your desktop. Does it contain anything you want? If not you can trash the folder.
