Not able to access Internet in browsers on Mac but can access everywhere else

After I have upgraded to 10.9, I face this at least thrice or more a day(and would resolve only after a system restart):

Suddenly browsers(Chrome, Safari, Firefox - all of them) shall stop connecting to the Internet

  • My other devices Android phone and RPi connects just perfect (even via Android Firefox and Chrome browsers). Not even speed problem or lag
  • Even on my Mac every thing else i.e. Adium, Dropbox, CloudApp etc works just fine, they are connected to the Internet as they should be
  • Just the browsers do not work. Not at all. Tried restarting them etc.

What I have not done or done:

  • I have not made any system changes, I swear.
  • When I try traceroute <website> it reaches their servers and does it fast as it does when I do with normal conenction(i.e. having Internet in the browsers)

Here's some background:

  • I have updatd to Mavericks
  • I connect to Internet via a Linksys Router and my MB Air is connected to router via Wi-Fi
  • I've Sophos anti-Virus installed(for 6 months+)
  • I have a raspberry pi(Ethernet) and an Anfroid phone(WiFi) connected to the same router and Internet (for 1 year+)

You might want to consider starting a new discussion. Since this one is marked solved and is a couple of years old, less people are likely to look at it. A new post would be much more visible. You can link to this one.

DNS Settings - Troubleshoot

Try a SMC reset. The article covers when this is required, but doing this will not affect anything.

I have this same issue ever since the upgrade. I do not (and never did) have any antivirus installed and now seeing that solves the issue, I wish I did.

I've tried Chrome, Safari and Opera. All fail to connect to the internet, while a ping to www.google.com works fine in the terminal.

I did find it happening quite often while I was using google hangouts, almost every 5 minutes. The fan on the machine would actually spin up as well right before the network would drop. Has anyone narrowed down the non-antivirus solution to this?

Well, my Firewall is switched ON but it has been so since the day I bought my Macbook Air and what was an year ago.

Also,

  • I never faced this problem before upgrading to 10.9.
  • I do not change Firewall setting after restart or before it the Internet works just fine.
  • It's just that everyday after 7-8 hrs (my guess) it just stops connecting on in browsers
  • As I have pointed out it works just fine everywhere else.

Could you please let me know what is the reason and why should I better diable Firewall even though I have it ON like this since the beginning?

Thanks.

Try the following:

Create a new location

- Click the WiFi symbol

- Open Network Preferences

- Click Advanced

- Remove ALL the Preferred Networks (make sure you have all your network passwords first)

- Click Done

- Click Apply

- Click Advanced

- Click the "+" symbol

- Click Choose Network

- Select your network and enter the password, click OK and Done

- Click Apply

Test the internet to see if that works.
