How to upgrade iPhoto

Using IMAC with OSX 10.6.8 and Iphoto 7.1.5. Tried to order photo book {it will be my 4th} and informed need to upgrade my Iphoto as iPhoto 7 cannot now be used for photobooks. Looked at MAC store to buy upgrade but saw that latest IPhoto is only compatible with OSX 10.9. Is this correct - I must also buy new OS in order to use iPhoto???

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Hi jonty123,

Welcome to the Support Communities!

The new Mavericks OS X 10.9 is a free upgrade from Snow Leopard.

Mavericks has to be installed in order to upgrade to iPhoto '11.

Apple - OS X Mavericks - Do even more with new apps and features.

You can upgrade to OS X Mavericks from Snow Leopard (10.6.8), Lion (10.7), or Mountain Lion (10.8).

Cheers,

Judy,

Many thanks for your reply. I guessed that was the only way - pity Apple will not give us access to previous versions of iphoto - would save having to do an OS update to my trusty and v reliable 5 yr old iMac. Especially as there do seem to be many problems with the current Mavericks release - c'st la vie

In part, what Judy said is false, because you can still install iPhoto '11 if you have got Mac OS X 10.6.8. However, you would have to buy iLife '11 on a DVD at Amazon to do this, and the most recent iPhoto version you will get is 9.2.3 instead of 9.5, which is the latest iPhoto '11 version.

Then, if you upgrade to OS X Mavericks in the future, you will be able to download iPhoto 9.5 free of charge
