Location Services

When I use maps or calender it knows exactly where i am. I use a proxy that routes my trafic thru europe so I can watch BBC/Itv, etc. If I check a whois site it shows me as being in Europe. HOw doe smy Mac know? It knows where I am with eerie accuracy. Any insight?
