Display issues after installing Mavericks

Have an iMac mid 2007 and installed Mavericks. However am noticing areas on the screen where there are moving diagonal lines (the best way I can describe it) and also on certain background colours like light grey there is a horizontal pin stripping effect.

I have reinstalled a clean copy of Mavericks twice and also reinstalled a clean copy of Mountain Lion to check for this issue but no sign of it in Mountain Lion at all.

Have been on to AppleCare and they have had me reset the SMC and PRAM and also repair permissions and repair disk as general troubleshooting but the problem still persists. They have said to try downloading the installer again for Mavericks, which I am currently doing, incase there is something wrong the first copy although installed and works fine on my MacBook.

Just wondered if anyone else had had this issue either using an iMac Mid 2007 with the ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256mb or later model?

I am wondering if it may be something to do with the driver included with Mavericks for my graphics card?

Thanks for any help anyone can give.

No the new installer did not solve the problem. Spoke to AppleCare again and they believe it may be related to a hardware issue and that Mavericks causes it to me more noticeable.

Unfortunately my iMac is now considered a "Vintage" model so Apple are unable to service it directly but did suggest I could try an Apple Authorised Service Provider to see if they are able to do anything.

So have gone back to Mountain Lion and will leave it as it is for the time being.

I too have an early 2008 iMac with exactly the same issue. Since install of Mavericks I have exactly as you described with the diagonal and horizontal lines. Horizontal lines seem to be worse on greys and diagonals on blues. I don't beleive for one minute that this is a hardware problem made more noticable with Mavericks. Seems like a pretty big coincidence that this is happening to so many machines.

I think its probably a porfile conflit and apple have no answer for it yet.

Another point I noticed, while working in photoshop when i chaged a solid grey photoshop file from cmyk to rgb the lines dissapeared. until I then opened the same file in illustrator and they came back. This is what makes me think its a profile problem.

Come on apple fix it, I can only guess there are alot more early imac users out there with the same problem.

Thanks for the reply.

Which graphics card do you have in your 2008 iMac? Is it the ATI Radeon HD 2400XT or the 2600 Pro?

I even noticed that when I booted from the Mavericks installer on a USB Flash Drive into the OS X Utilities for installing a fresh copy of the OS the issue was present then as well.

Even during a normal boot the issue is not there until the point where Mavericks takes over.

If anyone does comes across a solution or notices that it gets fixed when an update comes out Mavericks please let me know it would be greatly appreciated. Back running Mountain Lion at present and must say from what time I did have Mavericks installed performance was somewhat better.

hi, I also have this issue in my mid 2007 imac with ATI HD 2400 XT. Switching to icc Adobe rgb 1998 the situation gets better but still it's not perfect as mountain lion. It's definitely a driver issue, I think it's not possible that we all have the same damaged graphic cards revealed only in mavericks!!

I don't want to go back to lion because mavericks is really smoother than it and my imac seems to be reborn..

waiting for a patch from apple!

I've got the very same issue on my late 2007 iMac; it's got an "ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro" graphics chip. So it definitely looks like a driver issue.

I started a similar thread just a few days ago:

I agree with you guys: this has to be fixed by Apple -- they explicitly say that 2007 iMacs are supported, after all. I really hope this is done! Except for this annoying problem, Mavericks runs just perfectly on that device.

We are experiencing the same problems here. One iMac 2007 has the ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB and it seems even worse on the iMac early 2008 with ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT 128 MB.

After a bit of research, I first thought this had to do with the massive changes affecting color management and color profiles in Mavericks - but saturation and contrast seem to be another subject, as no one mentioned the moving lines/moiree/stripes in those discussions (i. e. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5471467?answerId=23530727022#23530727022).

Calibrating the monitor with advanced settings at least helped reduce the moiree and stripes in the majority of cases for me. I went to System Preferences > Displays > Color > Calibrate and enabled the checkbox to see all advanced settings. Choosing a "gamma correction" of 1,94 reduced a lot of the noise, although I am considering switching back to Lion until a proper fix is delivered. What a nuisance!

The youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qi-tw40NrbY shows exactly what I am experiencing with the diagonal lines thing.

Has anyone else contacted AppleCare about this? I will contact them again and point them to the the two discussions relating to this problem but if more people raise it with them the more chance of them patching it hopefully.

Have spoken to AppleCare again. They have asked me to take my iMac in to my nearest Apple Store for a Genius to have a look at it. Unfortunately my nearest Apple Store is about 1 hour 45 mins away or I could use an Authorised Service Provider (an hour away) to mail in my iMac to Apple. So not the most convenient solution for me and getting a spare day to take it is difficult at the moment.

Will keep you all updated if I do get chance to take my iMac in. But if anyone else has any luck please let me know.

silver76 - I have been using the online chat on the Apple Support site. I chose OS X mavericks from the support categories then when I got through to the chat you can "request an exception" to chat to apple without having to pay for support with being out of warranty on your iMac. Then just choose "recently purchased OS X" as the exception reason.

omg i am having the exact same issues and i'm glad i'm not the only one

using an early 2008 20" iMac with Graphics ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB.

after upgrading the Mavericks, I'm getting the wierd continuos diagonal wave lines which will be more obvious against light grey backgrounds.

don't think taking the to Applecare would resolve anything, it is definitely a software bug / driver issue.
