Mavericks files / directories in finder slow showing up

This is frustrating...I have it happening on 4 Macs in front of me...thought I had it with Vktor suggestion but it persists after a restart....

The best solution, the only one i can confirm works without any real issue, is the Snaggletooth_DE one.

This is extremely frustrating. I have mutliple issues that all involve Finder.

1. In the Adobe suite, when I go to open or save a file - the finder open/save window closes automatically. It pops up and closes quickly.

2. Slow Finder, when I try to open a file in Finder, the folder contents will not show, after waiting 10-15 seconds they will then populate.

3. Finder now showing correct file in preview. If I have a list of pictures for example, what is being show in the finder as the preview of the image is not the file that is selected.

I'm a HUGE Apple fan, but this is becoming very frustrating.

Well the 9.1 update has just been released, and it still doesn't address our delay problem! Good thing we still have Snaggletooth_DE's workaround! Shame on you Apple since this is no small matter for a lot of users! Guess we all know why Mavericks was offered free! 😟

Thanks for the 9.1 feedback. Anyone who hasn't already reported this to Apple should file Feedback or a Bug Report with them. Our reports ( to Apple ) obviously haven't attained squeaky wheel levels yet. Thank you.

#1 Haven't seen this in any application and it probably isn't related to the thread topic ( but I've been wrong before ). My suggestion would be to seaarch the Adobe forums first.

#2 Yep, this is the problem we are seeing and it isn't unique to the Finder. It happens in Open file dialogs ( with any application - I can reproduce at will in Preview.app and documented the process and gave Apple a code example in my bug report to reproduce it.

#3 Well that is definitely an issue but not the thread topic. What have you tried to troubleshoot or fix it?

FWIW, I do not see the slow folder contents problem with anything except when I first open a Finder window for the root level of my startup disk (like when I click on the Macintosh HD icon on the desktop).

And that only happens the first time I do that after starting up my Mac. Weirder still, if I open a Finder window to anything else, like for my home folder, & then use the path popup to navigate up to the startup disk in the same window, I don't see any delay there either. I don't see the delay at all in application open or save dialogs. 😕

I have no idea why I see such different behavior from what has been reported here. Maybe it is because I run almost no third party add-ons, or maybe there is something else different about my system that I haven't figured out yet. But I get the same results on two different iMacs, one a 2008 21" model running 10.9 & the other a 2012 27" one running 10.9.1.

(1) As noted in this somewhat related thread ( in discussion with me and St. Clair Software ) caching makes it work on subsquent attempts after the first. This is expected behavior; being slow on the first atempt, regardless of location, is not.

(2) I also see the same (bad )results on two machines( 2009 MacBook and mid-2011 27in IMac.) I run pretty close to stock software configuration and I've tried all the usual remedies to isolate a culprit ( safe mode start etc. ) without success. For me the only solution ( for both open dialogs and Finder windows ) is the hack of: /private/etc/auto_master. I knew 10.9.1 was offering no relief but couldn't say due to Apple's NDA requirements.

This has been plaguing me for months! It is so frustrating.

I tried Snagletooth_DE's solution in Visual Editor and I can't believe it! It works now!

Not to pick on your words but this is a workaround and a real solution is needed from Apple. If you haven't done so already, please consider sending feedback or a bug report to Apple. This is a good way to thank Snaggletooth.

Just to be clear about it, I do not see any delays on any open dialogs, or in any Finder windows except when opening the root level startup disk for the first time after starting up my iMacs.

This is quite a bit different from what other users are reporting.

Since updating to Mavericks, whenever I try to add images etc in ANY Browser, the finder popup freezes when I select Desktop for the image.

I have found a work around, I created a folder, I called Images on the desktop, and when I copy any images etc into that folder, I can select the folder, and the contents to add to browser etc.

This also works if I copy image to any other sidebar folder, ie documents.

Sometimes works off desktop if I reboot imac, for a while.

This is very annoying, and has only happened since 10.9 update

I have to Force Quit on the browser, to continue using that Browser

Firefox, Safari, Chrome, Camino, all the same. (Latest versions)

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9), System Profile 21.5-inch, Mid 2011
