Brand New to Final Cut Pro X. What should I be reading?

Hello Everybody,

I'm brand new to Final Cut Pro X. I've used video editors before but nothing of this level. I was hoping some kind hearted people out there might be able to point me to some articles or threads that I should be reading just to get myself familar with the Application before I even start. I am retired and just using it as a hobby but look forward to learning everything I can about it and how best to use it to its fullest capabilities.

Thank you everybody in advance for any help you may send my way,

DeadPhish

To get you going quickly I'll add 2 recommendations. If you're willing to watch videos Izzy offers a good introductory course which consists of 26 modules (over 2.5 hours) that'll give you a good foundation to get started. http://www.izzyvideo.com/final-cut-pro-x-tutorial/

There are lots of books around. Tom Wolsky (our resident expert on all things FCPX on this site) has a good book that is an instruction manual but also works as a reference for quickly looking up details (for when senior moments hit - guess how I know that). http://www.amazon.com/Final-Cut-iMovie-Express-Users/dp/0240823664/ref=la_B001JR WP5Q_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1382916474&sr=1-1

I found from personal experience that these 2 resources have been easily accessible and got me going quickly.

A third recommendation, which you've already hit upon, is to follow discussions on this site. If you search for references to training you'll find lots more recommendations.

Have fun. 🙂

First, I have too say that I think I'll bookmark Nolan's excellent "reading list" for future use myself.

Next, you have a great Mac for FCPX. It will make your learning experience better as well as paying off when you put those skills to work.

Finally, just to add one thing to Nolan''s list: consider a tutorial where you learn about concepts, techniques and then get experience in putting those to use in a structured fashion. Some of those are offered through some of the links in Nolan's post. I'd also consider the Apple Certified Pro tutorial with text book.

Good luck and have fun.

Also try (from FCPX menubar) Help > Final Cut Pro Help

or go here:

http://help.apple.com/finalcutpro/mac/10.0.6/

(it's faster for me.)

It's comprehensive, searchable, and rather well laid out/easy to navigate.

Also: FCPX is probably one of the *most* "Mac-like" applications to ever come down the pike. Whatever you would expect an NLE to do, look for it (Final Cut Pro menu > Commands > Customize (also searchable - upper right corner.)

iTunes podcasts > MacBreak Studio (on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL607BE2B2BFE9BE1A)

Hi Squamish ed & Russ H,

Thank you both for your recomendations I will check them all out.

I have a question for you guys I have been looking around for a FCP X cheat sheet with all the short cuts on a laminated sheet. I've seen them for older versions but not the current anybody know where I could get one or know were a legal pdf can be downloaded? I know the manual has them listed but I'm looking for something formated to fit on one page that is set up with the most commonly used ones.

Thanks,

DeadPhish
