No duplex printing with Samsung ML-2955ND and Mavericks

I upgraded to Mavericks this week (from Mountain Lion). My Samsung ML-2955ND printer allowed duplex (2-sided) printing under Mountain Lion, but the duplex functionality no longer works under Mavericks.

Open System Preferences > Printers & Scanners and select the Samsung in the Printers list. Then click on Options & Supplies and then the Options tab. If you see an entry about the Duplex/2-sided Unit, enable this setting and OK the change. Then check if you now have the option to print duplex.

Also note that if Samsung updated their driver to support OS X 10.9, the setting may be located under a different menu to what it was for OS X 10.8.

For those still struggling with Mac OS X 10.9 printer drivers for Samsung printers, I observed that Samsung have Mac OS 10.9 print drivers available on their support site:

Notice that the latest software update (Samsung Printer Drivers v2.6 for OS X) released last week only contains Mavericks drivers for six of the Samsung printers, whereas there are nearly two-dozen 10.9 drivers available for download direct from Samsung.

My printer (ML-2955ND) was not included in the latest software update from Apple, so I had to download and install from the Samsung support site. I had to remove my printer from Printers & Scanners (in System Preferences) then add a new printer. When selecting your Samsung printer, the driver may default to use AirPrint. Instead, simply select the newly installed Samsung driver (in my case, Samsung ML-2950 Series) and you're good!

I received a message from Samsung Customer Support today confirming that they do not yet have a printer driver for OS X 10.9 Mavericks.

I was advised to install the OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion printer driver, but was unsuccessful -- the Installer would not complete its execution.

I suspect that we may just have to wait until (and if) Samsung updates its printer drivers for OS X 10.9 Mavericks.

Success!

I tried re-installing OS X.8 driver, but also found it wouldn't complete execution.

However, I had a Super Duper clone of my HD from OS X.8, and transferredthe Samsung folder from the OS X.8 Printer Preferences folder, onto my OS X.9 Printer Preferences folder (I'd to authorise doing this) and to my surprise, duplex printing has returned.

Having switched off my computer overnight and fired it up this morning, it still prints duplex. I also tried hafecheese's selective printing and it worked too.

... perhaps I've been lucky having a clone of my OS X.8 HD, but, fingers crossed, it'll work until I hear from Samsung.

I was not able to install the PPD file from the Samsung driver package. Received an error.

Software update is up-to-date, and now shows:

Device Name: Samsung_ML_2950_Series__

Driver Version: 2.0

However, still no duplex.

I am a bit surprised that Samsung did not have updated printer drivers ready for 10.9 roll-out. The initial developer preview was back in June?

Add as new printer >> Use "Generic PCL" printer as a driver >> Pick "Duplex" option on the confirmation screen and it should work.

Good temporary fix until the new driver are released... If they do release it.

Was having the same issue with my Samsung SL-2820DW Duplex printer, and after hours of trying to figure this out, I went back to the basics and this did the trick.

Hopefully it works for everyone else as well!
