Note that the description provided for this problem as listed in the article was written about three years ago. Just because it doesn't look exactly like that description that was for a different OS doesn't mean it isn't the problem.
Also note that the symptoms did not appear for anyone until they upgraded to Mountain Lion. It didn't manifest itself in Snow Leopard.
When you take it in to be checked, take a printout of the article and make sure they test specifically for that problem.

Nov 1, 2013 6:07 AM in response to Gasoftwareby Matt Garrison,Same exact issues for me on my 2010 15" MBP :-(. Does not matter if I use the integrated or discrete graphics chip.

Nov 5, 2013 7:41 PM in response to Gasoftwareby Katier34,Same issues for me. They started today after I downloaded the newest update. Apple needs to fix this asap. There isn't an apple store within 200 miles of where I live, so taking it to a genius isn't an option.

Nov 5, 2013 7:44 PM in response to Katier34by Barney-15E,There's nothing Apple can fix from that far away. The GPU has a known defect.

Nov 5, 2013 9:18 PM in response to Barney-15Eby Katier34,Apparently Apple won't fix it anyways. "The NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor repair extension program ended on December 7, 2012. This program provided extended repair coverage for a period of four years from the date of purchase, and as of Dec 7th 2012, it is unlikely products qualify for this extended repair coverage."

Nov 5, 2013 10:28 PM in response to Barney-15Eby David Grover,It is not the card. I have a different NVIDIA (NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 256 MB). The problem is the graphic card auto switching functionunder Mavericks. DIA GeForce GT 330M 256 MB.

Nov 5, 2013 11:28 PM in response to David Groverby Katier34,David, were you able to fix it? I chatted with Apple for over an hour and they suggested resetting my PRAM and my SMC. I did both, and haven't experienced the problem again yet. Worth a try.
"What we need to do to reset the SMC is make sure the computer is plugged in and charging before shutting down the computer completely. While it is powered off, we will need to hold the Shift, Control, and Option keys on the bottom left hand corner of the keyboard as well as the power button for about 5-10 seconds. After holding these keys for 5-10 seconds, we can let go of the buttons and power on your computer normally. You will not notice anything happening on the computer during the reset, which is normal, as long as the computer does not restart while holding the keys the process completed normally.
To reset the PRAM on your computer, you will want to shut down the computer. Before restarting it, you will want to locate the Command, Option, P, and R keys on your keyboard. Once you do that, power on the computer and hold those 4 keys on the keyboard before the grey screen, and the startup chime. You will want to hold those keys until the computer restarts twice, or you hear the chime and see the grey screen twice. After that, you can release the keys and use your computer as normal."
Hope this helps!

Nov 5, 2013 11:51 PM in response to David Groverby conorfromvictoria,Nope. That graphics card has known problems
across platforms. Nothing to do with mavericks switching,
Although that being said there are other issues
with some earlier 2011 17" Mbp switching.

Nov 6, 2013 12:07 AM in response to conorfromvictoriaby David Grover,I imagine you are unaware of other list discussions on this matter.
There are too many who have experienced it only immediately after installing Mavericks - never prior to that.

Nov 6, 2013 12:23 AM in response to David Groverby conorfromvictoria,I am well aware of a completely separated issue
With discrete and integrated graphics switching.
The 8600GT is faulty and was recalled long ago.
This is a completely different issue.

Wrong article. Here is the Mid 2010 15" MBP article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088
But, it is only good for three years from date of purchase.
However, the problem doesn't appear, usually, until you upgrade, so you might be able to get someone at Apple to fix it for free.
Either way, free or paid, you'll have to replace the logic board to fix the problem. Software isn't going to fix it.

Nov 6, 2013 9:02 AM in response to Gasoftwareby Steve H,This response, to another post of mine, seems to solve the issue:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/23597995#23597995
I did this two days ago, and the situation has not recurred when waking the computer from sleep, and not recurred when the computer is running but idle.

Nov 9, 2013 1:12 AM in response to Steve Hby Toppimac,It didn't help me. I tried it, but after resetting PRAM and the SMC, the Mac was unable to boot. Disk Utility didn't help, recovering was impossible due to the older 10.8 backup, and Time Machine also had an older backup of my system prior to upgrading to Mavericks.
Thus I erased the disk, downloaded and installed Snow Leopard, transferred my data from Time Machine, and updated to Mavericks. 24 hours later: Same graphic issue again, just as posted above, sometimes the entire Finder window or application such as mail are affected, most of the time though it's the shaded areas of applications and window borders, or the names of applications in the dock and notifications popping up. MBP15", mid 2010.
