How do I transfer old pictures not taken by my iPhone onto my new macbook pro?

My hardrive broke and the apple store replaced it. I have over 6,000 photos on my phone under the "Last 12 months" folder. How do I transfer them onto this laptop without losing them? It is the only way that I can salvage these photos.

You'll need an app that can read the file system on the phone.

iExplorer is one such app, but there are others. Search on MacUpdate

It says that it can't be installed since iExplorer is damaged.
